 44:1 ¶ THE WORD THAT CAME TO JEREMIAH{gr.JEREMIAS} for all the Jews dwelling in the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, and for those settled in Migdol{gr.Magdolo} and in Tahpanhes{gr.Taphnas}, and in the land of Pathura, saying,

 44:1 ¶ The wordº thatº cameº toº Jeremiahº concerningº allº the Jewsº which dwellºº in the landº of Egypt,º which dwellºº at Migdol,º and at Tahpanhes,º and at Noph,º and in the countryº of Pathros,º saying,ºº

 44:2 Thus has the Lord God of Israel said; Ye have seen all the evils which I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon the cities of Judah{gr.Juda}; and, behold, they are desolate without inhabitants,

 44:2 Thusº saithºº Yahwehº Sabaoth,º the Elohimº of Israel;º Yeº have seenººº allº the evilº thatº I have broughtºº uponº Jerusalem,º and uponº allº the citiesº of Judah;º and, behold,º thisº dayº they [are] a desolation,º and noº man dwellethºº therein,

 44:3 because of their wickedness, which they have wrought to provoke me, [by] going to burn incense to other gods, whom ye knew not.

 44:3 Becauseºº of their wickednessº whichº they have committedºº to provoke me to anger,ºº in that they wentººº to burn incense,ºº [and] to serveºº otherº elohim,º whomº they knewºº not,º [neither] they,º ye,º nor your fathers.º

 44:4 Yet I sent to you my servants the prophets early in the morning, and I sent, saying, Do not ye this abominable thing which I hate.

 44:4 Howbeit I sentºº untoº youº allº my servantsº the prophets,º rising earlyºº and sendingºº [them], saying,ºº Oh,º doºº notºº thisº abominableº thingº thatº I hate.ºº

 44:5 But they hearkened not to me, and inclined not their ear to turn from their wickedness, so as not to burn incense to strange gods.

 44:5 But they hearkenedºº not,º norº inclinedººº their earº to turnºº from their wickedness,ºº to burnº noº incenseºº unto otherº elohim.º

 44:6 So mine anger and my wrath dropped [upon them], and was kindled in the gates of Judah{gr.Juda}, and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they became a desolation and a waste, as at this day.

 44:6 Wherefore my furyº and mine angerº was poured forth,ºº and was kindledºº in the citiesº of Judahº and in the streetsº of Jerusalem;º and they areº wastedº [and] desolate,º as at thisº day.º

 44:7 And now thus has the Lord Almighty said, Wherefore do ye commit [these] great evils against your souls? to cut off man and woman of you, infant and suckling from the midst of Judah{gr.Juda}, to the end that not one of you should be left;

 44:7 Therefore nowº thusº saithºº Yahweh,º the Elohimº Sabaoth,º the Elohimº of Israel;º Whereforeº commitºº yeº [this] greatº evilº againstº your souls,º to cut offºº from you manº and woman,º childº and suckling,ºº outº ofºº Judah,º to leaveºº you noneº to remain;º

 44:8 by provoking me with the works of your hands, to burn incense to other gods in the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, into which ye entered to dwell there, that ye might be cut off, and that ye might become a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

 44:8 In that ye provoke me unto wrathºº with the worksº of your hands,º burning incenseºº unto otherº elohimº in the landº of Egypt,º whitherºº yeº be goneºº to dwell,ºº thatº ye might cut yourselves off,ºº and thatº ye might beº a curseº and a reproachº among allº the nationsº of the earth?º

 44:9 Have ye forgotten the sins of your fathers, and the sins of the kings of Judah{gr.Juda}, and the sins of your princes, and the sins of your wives, which they wrought in the land of Judah{gr.Juda}, and in the streets of Jerusalem?

 44:9 Have ye forgottenººº the wickednessº of your fathers,º and the wickednessº of the kingsº of Judah,º and the wickednessº of their wives,º and your own wickedness,º and the wickednessº of your wives,º whichº they have committedºº in the landº of Judah,º and in the streetsº of Jerusalem?º

 44:10 And have not ceased even to this day, and they have not kept to my ordinances, which I set before their fathers.

 44:10 They are notº humbledºº [even] untoº thisº day,º neitherº have they feared,ºº norº walkedºº in my law,º nor in my statutes,º thatº I setºº beforeº you and beforeº your fathers.º

 44:11 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord; Behold I do set my face against [you]

 44:11 ¶ Thereforeº thusº saithºº Yahwehº Sabaoth,º the Elohimº of Israel;º Behold,º I will setºº my faceº against you for evil,º and to cut offººº allº Judah.º

 44:12 to destroy all the remnant that are in Mizraim{gr.Egypt}; and they shall fall by the sword, and by famine, and shall be consumed small and great: and they shall be for reproach, and for destruction, and for a curse.

 44:12 And I will takeººº the remnantº of Judah,º thatº have setºº their facesº to goºº intoº the landº of Egyptº to sojournºº there,º and they shall allº be consumed,ºº [and] fallºº in the landº of Egypt;º they shall [even] be consumedºº by the swordº [and] by the famine:º they shall die,ºº from the leastºº even untoº the greatest,º by the swordº and by the famine:º and they shall beº an execration,º [and] an astonishment,º and a curse,º and a reproach.º

 44:13 And I will visit them that dwell in the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, as I have visited Jerusalem, with sword and with famine:

 44:13 For I will punishººº them that dwellºº in the landº of Egypt,º asº I have punishedººº Jerusalem,º by the sword,º by the famine,º and by the pestilence:º

 44:14 and there shall not one be preserved of the remnant of Judah{gr.Juda} that sojourn in the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, to return to the land of Judah{gr.Juda}, to which they hope in their hearts to return: they shall not return, but only they that escape.

 44:14 So that noneº of the remnantº of Judah,º which are goneºº into the landº of Egyptº to sojournºº there,º shallº escapeº or remain,º that they should returnºº into the landº of Judah,º to the whichº theyº haveºº a desireººº to returnºº to dwellºº there:º forº noneº shall returnºº butºº such as shall escape.ºº

 44:15 ¶ Then all the men that knew that their wives burned incense, and all the women, a great multitude, and all the people that dwelt in the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, in Pathura, answered Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias}, saying,

 44:15 ¶ Then allº the menºº which knewºº thatº their wivesº had burned incenseºº unto otherº elohim,º and allº the womenº that stood by,ºº a greatº multitude,º even allº the peopleº that dweltºº in the landº of Egypt,º in Pathros,º answeredººº Jeremiah,º saying,ºº

 44:16 [As for] the word which thou hast spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken to thee.

 44:16 [As for] the wordº thatº thou hast spokenºº untoº us in the nameº of Yahweh,º we will notº hearkenºº untoº thee.

 44:17 For we will surely perform every word that shall proceed out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour drink-offerings to her, as wee and our fathers have done, and our kings and princes, in the cities of Judah{gr.Juda}, and in the streets of Jerusalem: and [so] we were filled with bread, and were well, and saw no evils.

 44:17 Butº we will certainlyºº doººº whatsoeverºº thingº goeth forthºº out of our own mouth,ºº to burn incenseºº unto the queenº of heaven,º and to pour outºº drink offeringsº unto her, asº we have done,ºº we,º and our fathers,º our kings,º and our princes,º in the citiesº of Judah,º and in the streetsº of Jerusalem:º for [then] had we plentyºº of victuals,º and wereº well,º and sawºº noº evil.º

 44:18 But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, we have all been brought low, and have been consumed by sword and by famine.

 44:18 But sinceºº we left offºº to burn incenseºº to the queenº of heaven,º and to pour outºº drink offeringsº unto her, we have wantedºº allº [things], and have been consumedºº by the swordº and by the famine.º

 44:19 And whereas we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured drink-offerings to her, did we make cakes to her, and pour drink-offerings to her, without our husbands?

 44:19 And whenº weº burned incenseºº to the queenº of heaven,º and poured outºº drink offeringsº unto her, did we makeºº her cakesº to worshipºº her, and pour outºº drink offeringsº unto her, withoutºº our men?ºº

 44:20 ¶ Then Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias} answered all the people, the mighty men, and the women, and all the people that returned him [these] words for answer, saying,

 44:20 ¶ Then Jeremiahº saidºº untoº allº the people,º toº the men,º and toº the women,º and toº allº the peopleº which had given him [that] answer,ºººº saying,ºº

 44:21 Did not the Lord remember the incense which ye burned in the cities of Judah{gr.Juda}, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, and your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land? and came it not into his heart?

 44:21 º The incenseº thatº ye burnedºº in the citiesº of Judah,º and in the streetsº of Jerusalem,º ye,º and your fathers,º your kings,º and your princes,º and the peopleº of the land,º did notº Yahwehº rememberºº them, and cameºº it [not] intoº his mind?º

 44:22 And the Lord could no longer bear [you], because of the wickedness of your doings, and because of your abominations which ye wrought; and so your land became a desolation and a waste, and a curse, as at this day;

 44:22 So that Yahwehº couldºº noº longerº bear,ºº becauseºº of the evilº of your doings,º [and] becauseºº of the abominationsº whichº ye have committed;ºº therefore isº your landº a desolation,º and an astonishment,º and a curse,º withoutºº an inhabitant,ºº as at thisº day.º

 44:23 because of your burning incense, and [because] of the things wherein ye sinned against the Lord: and ye have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord, and have not walked in his ordinances, and in his law, and in his testimonies; and so these evils have come upon you.

 44:23 Becauseººº ye have burned incense,ºº and becauseº ye have sinnedºº against Yahweh,º and have notº obeyedºº the voiceº of Yahweh,º norº walkedºº in his law,º nor in his statutes,º nor in his testimonies;º thereforeºº thisº evilº is happenedºº untoº you, as at thisº day.º

 44:24 And Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias} said to the people, and to the women, Hear ye the word of the Lord.

 44:24 Moreover Jeremiahº saidºº untoº allº the people,º and toº allº the women,º Hearºº the wordº of Yahweh,º allº Judahº thatº [are] in the landº of Egypt:º

 44:25 Thus has the Lord God of Israel said; Ye women have spoken with your mouth, and ye fulfilled [it] with your hands, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour drink-offerings to her: full well did ye keep to your vows, and ye have indeed performed [them].

 44:25 Thusº saithºº Yahwehº Sabaoth,º the Elohimº of Israel,º saying;ºº Yeº and your wivesº have both spokenºº with your mouths,º and fulfilledºº with your hand,º saying,ºº We will surelyºº performººº our vowsº thatº we have vowed,ºº to burn incenseºº to the queenº of heaven,º and to pour outºº drink offeringsº unto her: ye will surelyºº accomplishººº your vows,º and surelyºº performººº your vows.º

 44:26 Therefore hear ye the word of the Lord, all Jews dwelling in the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the Lord, my name shall no longer be in the mouth of every Jew to say, The Lord lives, in all the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}.

 44:26 Thereforeº hearºº ye the wordº of Yahweh,º allº Judahº that dwellºº in the landº of Egypt;º Behold,º I have swornºº by my greatº name,º saithºº Yahweh,º that my nameº shall noº moreº beº namedºº in the mouthº of anyº manº of Judahº in allº the landº of Egypt,º saying,ºº Adonaiº Yahwehº liveth.º

 44:27 For I have watched over them, to hurt them, and not to do them good: and all the Jews dwelling in the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} shall perish by sword and by famine, until they are utterly consumed.

 44:27 Behold,º I will watchºº overº them for evil,º and notº for good:º and allº the menº of Judahº thatº [are] in the landº of Egyptº shall be consumedºº by the swordº and by the famine,º untilº there be an endºº of them.

 44:28 And they that escape the sword shall return to the land of Judah{gr.Juda} few in number, and the remnant of Judah{gr.Juda}, who have continued in the land [of] Mizraim{gr.Egypt} to dwell there, shall know whose word shall stand.

 44:28 Yet a smallº numberº that escapeº the swordº shall returnº outºº ofº the landº of Egyptº into the landº of Judah,º and allº the remnantº of Judah,º that are goneºº into the landº of Egyptº to sojournºº there,º shall knowºº whoseº wordsº shall stand,ºº mine,º or theirs.º

 44:29 ¶ And this [shall be] a sign to you, that I will visit you for evil.

 44:29 ¶ And thisº [shall be] a signº unto you, saithºº Yahweh,º thatº Iº will punishººº you in thisº place,º thatº ye may knowºº thatº my wordsº shall surelyºº standºº againstº you for evil:º

 44:30 Thus said the Lord; Behold, I [will] give Uaphres king of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} into the hands of his enemy, and into the hands of one that seeks his life; as I gave Zedekiah{gr.Sedekias} king of Judah{gr.Juda} into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar{gr.Nabuchodonosor} king of Babylon, his enemy, and who sought his life.

 44:30 Thusº saithºº Yahweh;º Behold,º I will giveººº Pharaohhophraº kingº of Egyptº into the handº of his enemies,ºº and into the handº of them that seekºº his life;º asº I gaveººº Zedekiahº kingº of Judahº into the handº of Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylon,º his enemy,ºº and that soughtºº his life.º
