 2:1 ¶ And he said, Thus saith the Lord,

 2:1 ¶ Moreover the wordº of Yahwehº cameº toº me, saying,ºº

 2:2 I remember the kindness of thy youth, and the love of thine espousals,

 2:2 Goºº and cryºº in the earsº of Jerusalem,º saying,ºº Thusº saithºº Yahweh;º I rememberºº thee, the kindnessº of thy youth,º the loveº of thine espousals,º when thou wentestººº afterº me in the wilderness,º in a landº [that was] notº sown.ºº

 2:3 in following the Holy One of Israel, saith the Lord, Israel was the holy [people] to the Lord, [and] the first-fruits of his increase: al that devoured him shall offend; evils shall come upon them, saith the Lord.

 2:3 Israelº [was] holinessº unto Yahweh,º [and] the firstfruitsº of his increase:º allº that devourºº him shall offend;ºº evilº shall comeºº uponº them, saithºº Yahweh.º

 2:4 Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and every family of the house of Israel.

 2:4 Hearºº ye the wordº of Yahweh,º O houseº of Jacob,º and allº the familiesº of the houseº of Israel:º

 2:5 ¶ Thus saith the Lord, What trespass have your fathers found in me, that they have revolted far from me, and gone after vanities, and become vain?

 2:5 ¶ Thusº saithºº Yahweh,º Whatº iniquityº have your fathersº foundºº in me, thatº they are gone farºº fromºº me, and have walkedººº afterº vanity,º and are become vain?ºº

 2:6 And they said not, Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, who guided us in the wilderness, in an untried and trackless land, in a land which no man at all went through, and no man dwelt there?

 2:6 Neitherº saidºº they, Whereº [is] Yahwehº that brought us upººº out of the landºº of Egypt,º that ledººº us through the wilderness,º through a landº of desertsº and of pits,º through a landº of drought,º and of the shadow of death,º through a landº that noº manº passed through,ºº and whereº noº manº dwelt?ºº

 2:7 And I brought you to Carmel, that ye should eat the fruits thereof, and the good thereof; and ye went in, and defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.

 2:7 And I broughtºº you intoº a plentifulº country,º to eatºº the fruitº thereof and the goodnessº thereof; but when ye entered,ºº ye defiledººº my land,º and madeºº mine heritageº an abomination.º

 2:8 The priests said not, Where is the Lord? and they that held by the law knew me not: the shepherds also sinned against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after that which profited not.

 2:8 The priestsº saidºº not,º Whereº [is] Yahweh?º and they that handleºº the lawº knewºº me not:º the pastorsºº also transgressedºº against me, and the prophetsº prophesiedºº by Baal,º and walkedºº afterº [things that] do notº profit.ºº

 2:9 ¶ Therefore I will yet plead with you, and will plead with your children's children.

 2:9 ¶ Whereforeº I will yetº pleadºº withº you, saithºº Yahweh,º and withº your children'sº childrenº will I plead.ºº

 2:10 For go to the isles of the Hittites{gr.Chettians}, and se; and send to Kedar, and observe accurately, and see if such things have been done;

 2:10 Forº pass overºº the islesº of Chittim,º and see;ºº and sendºº unto Kedar,º and considerºº diligently,º and seeºº if there beº suchº a thing.

 2:11 if the nations will change their gods, though they are not gods: but my people have changed their glory, [for that] from which they shall not be profited.

 2:11 Hath a nationº changedººº [their] elohim,º whichº [are] yet noº elohim?º but my peopleº have changedºº their gloryº for [that which] doth notº profit.ºº

 2:12 The heaven is amazed at this, and is very exceedingly horror-struck, saith the Lord.

 2:12 Be astonished,ºº O ye heavens,º atº this,º and be horribly afraid,ºº be ye veryº desolate,ºº saithºº Yahweh.º

 2:13 For my people has committed two [faults], and evil ones: they have forsaken me, the fountain of water of life, and hewn out for themselves broken cisterns, which will not be able to hold water.

 2:13 Forº my peopleº have committedºº twoº evils;º they have forsakenºº me the fountainº of livingº waters,º [and] hewed them outºº cisterns,º brokenºº cisterns,º thatº can holdºº noº water.º

 2:14 ¶ Is Israel a servant, or a home-born slave? why has he become a spoil?

 2:14 ¶ [Is] Israelº a servant?º [is] heº a homebornºº [slave]? whyº isº he spoiled?º

 2:15 The lions roared upon him, and uttered their voice, which have made his land a wilderness: and his cities are broken down, that they should not be inhabited.

 2:15 The young lionsº roaredºº uponº him, [and] yelled,ººº and they madeºº his landº waste:º his citiesº are burnedºº withoutºº inhabitant.ºº

 2:16 Also the children of Noph{gr.Memphis} and Tahpanhes{gr.Taphnas} have known thee, and mocked thee.

 2:16 Alsoº the childrenº of Nophº and Tahapanesº have brokenºº the crown of thy head.º

 2:17 Has not thy forsaking me brought these things upon thee? saith the Lord thy God.

 2:17 Hast thou notº procuredºº thisº unto thyself, in that thou hast forsakenººº Yahwehº thy Elohim,º whenº he ledººº thee by the way?º

 2:18 And now what hast thou to do with the way of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, to drink the water of Geon? and what hast thou to do with the way of the Assyrians, to drink the water of rivers?

 2:18 And nowº whatº hast thou to do in the wayº of Egypt,º to drinkºº the watersº of Sihor?º or whatº hast thou to do in the wayº of Assyria,º to drinkºº the watersº of the river?º

 2:19 Thine apostasy shall correct thee, and thy wickedness shall reprove thee: know then, and see, that thy forsaking me [has been] bitter to thee, saith the Lord thy God; and I have taken no pleasure in thee, saith the Lord thy God.

 2:19 Thine own wickednessº shall correctºº thee, and thy backslidingsº shall reproveºº thee: knowºº therefore and seeºº thatº [it is] an evilº [thing] and bitter,º that thou hast forsakenººº Yahwehº thy Elohim,º and that my fearº [is] notº inº thee, saithºº Adonaiº Yahwehº Sabaoth.º

 2:20 ¶ For of old thou hast broken thy yoke, and plucked asunder thy bands; and thou has said, I will not serve thee, but will go upon every high hill, and under every shady tree, there will I indulge in my fornication.

 2:20 ¶ Forº of old timeºº I have brokenºº thy yoke,º [and] burstºº thy bands;º and thou saidst,ºº I will notº transgress;ºººº whenº uponº everyº highº hillº and underº everyº greenº treeº thouº wanderest,ºº playing the harlot.ºº

 2:21 Yet I planted thee a fruitful vine, entirely of the right sort: how art thou a strange vine turned to bitterness!

 2:21 Yet Iº had plantedºº thee a noble vine,º whollyº a rightº seed:º howº then art thou turnedºº into the degenerateº plantº of a strangeº vineº unto me?

 2:22 Though thou shouldest wash thyself with nitre, and multiply to thyself soap, [still] thou art stained by thine iniquities before me, saith the Lord.

 2:22 Forº thoughº thou washºº thee with nitre,º and take thee muchºº soap,º [yet] thine iniquityº is markedºº beforeº me, saithºº Adonaiº Yahweh.º

 2:23 How wilt thou say, I am not polluted, and have not gone after Baal? behold thy ways in the burial-ground, and know what thou hast done: her voice has howled in the evening:

 2:23 Howº canst thou say,ºº I am notº polluted,ºº I have notº goneºº afterº Baalim?º seeºº thy wayº in the valley,º knowºº whatº thou hast done:ºº [thou art] a swiftº dromedaryº traversingºº her ways;º

 2:24 she has extended her ways over the waters of the desert; she was hurried along by the lusts of her soul; she is given up [to them], who will turn her back? none that seek her shall be weary; at [the time of] her humiliation they shall find her.

 2:24 A wild assº usedº to the wilderness,º [that] snuffeth upºº the windº at her pleasure;ºº in her occasionº whoº can turn her away?ºº allº they that seekºº her will notº wearyºº themselves; in her monthº they shall findºº her.

 2:25 Withdraw thy foot from a rough way, and thy throat from thirst: but she said I will strengthen myself: for she loved strangers, and went after them.

 2:25 Withholdºº thy footº from being unshod,ºº and thy throatº from thirst:ºº but thou saidst,ºº There is no hope:ºº no;º forº I have lovedºº strangers,ºº and afterº them will I go.ººº

 2:26 As is the shame of a thief when he is caught, so shall the children of Israel be ashamed; they, and their kings, and their princes, and their priests, and their prophets.

 2:26 As the thiefº is ashamedº whenº he is found,ºº soº is the houseº of Israelº ashamed;ººº they,º their kings,º their princes,º and their priests,º and their prophets,º

 2:27 They said to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou has begotten me: and they have turned [their] backs to me, and not their faces: yet in the time of their afflictions they will say, Arise, and save us.

 2:27 Sayingºº to a stock,º Thouº [art] my father;º and to a stone,º Thouº hast brought me forth:ºº forº they have turnedºº [their] backº untoº me, and notº [their] face:º but in the timeº of their troubleº they will say,ºº Arise,ºº and saveºº us.

 2:28 And where are thy gods, which thou madest for thyself? will they arise and save in the time of thine affliction? for according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah{gr.Juda}; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem they sacrificed to Baal.

 2:28 But whereº [are] thy elohimº thatº thou hast madeºº thee? let them arise,ºº ifº they can saveºº thee in the timeº of thy trouble:º forº [according to] the numberº of thy citiesº areº thy elohim,º O Judah.º

 2:29 Wherefore do ye speak unto me? ye all have been ungodly, and ye all have transgressed against me, saith the Lord.

 2:29 Whereforeº will ye pleadºº withº me? ye allº have transgressedºº against me, saithºº Yahweh.º

 2:30 In vain have I smitten your children; ye have not received correction: a sword has devoured your prophets as a destroying lion; yet ye feared not.

 2:30 In vainº have I smittenººº your children;º they receivedºº noº correction:º your own swordº hath devouredºº your prophets,º like a destroyingºº lion.º

 2:31 ¶ Hear ye the word of the Lord: thus saith the Lord, Have I been a wilderness or a dry land to Israel? wherefore has my people said, We will not be ruled over, and will not come to thee any more?

 2:31 ¶ O generation,º seeºº yeº the wordº of Yahweh.º Have I beenº a wildernessº unto Israel?º a landº of darkness?º whereforeº sayºº my people,º We are lords;ºº we will comeºº noº moreº untoº thee?

 2:32 Will a bride forget her ornaments, or a virgin her girdle? but my people has forgotten me days without number.

 2:32 Can a maidº forgetºº her ornaments,º [or] a brideº her attire?º yet my peopleº have forgottenºº me daysº withoutº number.º

 2:33 What fair device wilt thou yet employ in thy ways, so as to seek love? [it shall] not [be] so; moreover thou has done wickedly in corrupting thy ways;

 2:33 Whyº trimmestºº thou thy wayº to seekºº love?º thereforeº hast thou alsoº taughtººº the wicked onesºº thy ways.º

 2:34 and in thine hands has been found the blood of innocent souls; I have not found them in holes, but on every oak.

 2:34 Alsoº in thy skirtsº is foundºº the bloodº of the soulsº of the poorº innocents:º I have notº foundºº it by secret search,º butº uponº allº these.º

 2:35 Yet thou saidst, I am innocent: only let his wrath be turned away from me. Behold, I [will] plead with thee, whereas thou sayest, I have not sinned.

 2:35 Yet thou sayest,ºº Becauseº I am innocent,ºº surelyº his angerº shall turnºº fromº me. Behold,º I will pleadºº withº thee, becauseº thou sayest,ºº I have notº sinned.ºº

 2:36 For thou has been so exceedingly contemptuous as to repeat thy ways; but thou shalt be ashamed of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, as thou wast ashamed of Asshur{gr.Assur}.

 2:36 Whyº gaddestº thou aboutºº so muchº to changeººº thy way?º thou alsoº shalt be ashamedºº of Egypt,ºº asº thou wast ashamedºº of Assyria.ºº

 2:37 For thou shalt go forth thence also with thine hands upon thine head; for the Lord has rejected thine hope, and thou shalt not prosper in it.

 2:37 Yea,º thou shalt go forthºº fromºº him,º and thine handsº uponº thine head:º forº Yahwehº hath rejectedºº thy confidences,º and thou shalt notº prosperºº in them.
