IN THE FOURTH YEAR OF JEHOIAKIM{gr.JOAKIM} son of Josiah{gr.Josias} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, |

Jeremiahº

Yahweh,º

Take thee a roll of a book, and write upon it all the words which I spoke to thee against Jerusalem, and against Judah{gr.Juda}, and against all the nations, from the day when I spoke to thee, from the days of Josiah{gr.Josias} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, even to this day. |

Perhaps the house of Judah{gr.Juda} will hear all the evils which I purpose to do to them; that they may turn from their evil way; and [so] I will be merciful to their iniquities and their sins. |

Iº
purposeºº
to doºº
unto them; thatº
they may returnºº
every manº
from his evilº
way;ºº
that I may forgiveºº
their iniquityº

So Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias} called Baruch the son of Neriah{gr.Nerias}: and he wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias} all the words of the Lord, which he had spoken to him, on a roll of a book. |

And Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias} commanded Baruch, saying, I am in prison; I cannot enter into the house of the Lord: |

Iº
[am] shut up;ºº
I cannotººº
goºº
into the houseº
of Yahweh:º |

so thou shalt read in this roll in the ears of the people in the house of the Lord, on the fast day; and in the ears of all Judah{gr.Juda} that come out of their cities, thou shalt read to them. |

in the roll,º
whichº
thou hast writtenºº
from my mouth,ººº
the wordsº
of Yahwehº
in the earsº
of the peopleº
in Yahweh'sº
houseº
upon the fastingº

and alsoº

that comeº

Peradventure their supplication will come before the Lord, and they will turn from their evil way: for great is the wrath and the anger of the Lord, which he has pronounced against this people. |

they will presentºº
their supplicationº
beforeº
Yahweh,º
and will returnºº
every oneº
from his evilº
way:ºº
forº
greatº
[is] the angerº
and the furyº
thatº
Yahwehº
hath pronouncedºº
againstº
thisº
people.º |

And Baruch did according to all that Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias} commanded him-- reading in the book the words of the Lord in the Lord's house. |

And it came to pass in the eighth year of king Jehoiakim{gr.Joakim}, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem, and the house of Judah{gr.Juda}, proclaimed a fast before the Lord. |

And Baruch read in the book the words of Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias} in the house of the Lord, in the house of Gamarias son of Shaphan{gr.Saphan} the scribe, in the upper court, in the entrance of the new gate of the house of the Lord, and in the ears of all the people. |

And Micah{gr.Michaeas} the son of Gamarias the son of Shaphan{gr.Saphan} heard all the words of the Lord, out of the book. |

the bookºº

the wordsº
of Yahweh,º |

And he went down to the king's house, into the house of the scribe: and, behold, there were sitting there all the princes, Elishama{gr.Elisama} the scribe, and Dalaeas the son of Shelemiah{gr.Selemias}, and Jonathan the son of Acchobor, and Gamarias the son of Shaphan{gr.Saphan}, and Zedekiah{gr.Sedekias} the son of Hananiah{gr.Ananias}, and all the princes. |

[even] Elishamaº

and Delaiahº

and Zedekiahº
the sonº
of Hananiah,º
and allº
the princes.º |

And Micah{gr.Michaeas} reported to them all the words which he had heard Baruch reading in the ears of the people. |

And all the princes sent to Baruch son of Neriah{gr.Nerias} Judin the son of Nethaniah{gr.Nathanias}, the son of Shelemiah{gr.Selemias}, the son of Hushai{gr.Chusi}, saying, Take in thine hand the roll in which thou readest in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch took the roll, and went down to them. |

And they said to him, Read [it] again in our ears. And Baruch read [it]. |

And it came to pass, when they [had] heard all the words, [that] they took counsel each with his neighbour, and said, Let us by all means tell the king all these words. |

Now it came to pass,º
when they had heardººº

the words,º
they were afraidºº
bothº
oneº
and other,º
and saidºº
untoº
Baruch,º
We will surelyºº
tellºº
the kingº
ofº
allº
theseº

And they asked Baruch, saying, Where didst thou write all these words? |

us now,º
Howº
didst thou writeººº

at his mouth?ºº |

And Baruch said, Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias} told me from his [own] mouth all these words, and I wrote them in a book. |

Then Baruchº
answeredºº
them, He pronouncedººº
allº
theseº
wordsº
untoº
me with his mouth,ºº
and Iº
wroteºº
[them] with inkº
inº
the book.º |

And they said to Baruch, Go, and hide, thou and Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias}; let no man know where ye [are]. |

the princesº

Baruch,º
Go,ººº
hideºº
thee, thouº
and Jeremiah;º
and let noº
manº
knowºº
whereº
ye be. |

36:20 ¶
And they went in to the king into the court, and gave the roll [to one] to keep in the house of Elishama{gr.Elisama}; and they told the king all these words. |
|
36:20 ¶
And they went inºº

the kingº
into the court,º
but they laid upºº
the rollº
in the chamberº
of Elishamaº
the scribe,ºº
and toldººº
allº
the wordsº
in the earsº
of the king.º |

36:21
And the king sent Judin to fetch the roll: and he took it out of the house of Elishama{gr.Elisama}: and Judin read in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes who stood round the king. |
|

the roll:º
and he tookºº
it out of Elishamaº
the scribe'sºº
chamber.ºº
And Jehudiº
readºº
it in the earsº
of the king,º
and in the earsº
of allº
the princesº
which stoodºº

Now the king was sitting in the winter house: and [there was] a fire on the hearth before him. |

Now the kingº

in the winterhouseºº
in the ninthº
month:º
and [there was a fire] on the hearthº
burningºº
beforeº
him. |

36:23
And it came to pass when Judin had read three or four leaves, he cut them off with a penknife, and cast [them] into the fire that was on the hearth, until the whole roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth. |
|
36:23
And it came to pass,º
[that] when Jehudiº
had readºº
threeº
or fourº
leaves,º
he cutºº
it with the penknife,ººº
and castºº
[it] intoº
the fireº
thatº
[was] onº
the hearth,º
untilº
allº
the rollº
was consumedºº
inº
the fireº
thatº
[was] onº
the hearth.º |

And the king and his servants that heard all these words sought not [the Lord], and rent not their garments. |
|
36:24
Yet they were notº
afraid,ºº
norº
rentººº
their garments,º
[neither] the king,º
nor anyº
of his servantsº
that heardººº
allº
theseº
words.º |

36:25
But Elnathan and Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} suggested to the king that he should burn the roll. |
|
36:25
Neverthelessº
Elnathanº
and Delaiahº
and Gemariahº
had made intercessionºº
to the kingº
that he would notº
burnººº
the roll:º
but he would notº
hearººº
them. |

36:26
And the king commanded Jerahmeel{gr.Jeremeel} the king's son, and Seraiah{gr.Saraeas} the son of Esriel, to take Baruch and Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias}: but they were hidden. |

But the kingº

of Hammelech,º
and Seraiahº
the sonº
of Azriel,º
and Shelemiahº
the sonº
of Abdeel,º
to takeººº
Baruchº
the scribeºº
and Jeremiahº

Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias}, after the king had burnt the roll, [even] all the words which Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias}, saying, |

and the wordsº

Again take thou another roll, and write all the words that were on the roll, which king Jehoiakim{gr.Joakim} has burnt. |

And thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Thou hast burnt this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come in, and destroy this land, and man and cattle shall fail from off it? |

and destroyººº

land,º
and shall cause to ceaseºº
fromº
thence manº
and beast?º |

Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Jehoiakim{gr.Joakim} king of Judah{gr.Juda}; He shall not have [a man] to sit on the throne of David: and his carcass shall be cast forth in the heat by day, and in the frost by night. |

the throneº
of David:º
and his dead bodyº

And I will visit him, and his family, and his servants: and I will bring upon him, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the land of Judah{gr.Juda}, all the evils which I spoke of to them; and they hearkened not. |

their iniquity;º
and I will bringºº

them, and uponº
the inhabitantsºº
of Jerusalem,º

the evilº

And Baruch took another roll, and wrote upon it from the mouth of Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias} all the words of the book which Jehoiakim{gr.Joakim} had burnt: and there were yet more words added to it like the former. |
