 3:1 ¶ If a man put away his wife, and she depart from him, and become another man's, shall she return to him any more at all? shall not that woman be utterly defiled? ye thou hast gone a-whoring with many shepherds, and hast returned to me, saith the Lord.

 3:1 ¶ They say,ºº Ifº a manº put awayººº his wife,º and she goºº fromºº him, and becomeº anotherº man's,º shall he returnº untoº her again?ººº shall notº thatº landº be greatlyºº polluted?ºº but thouº hast played the harlotºº with manyº lovers;º yet returnº againºº toº me, saithºº Yahweh.º

 3:2 Lift up thine eyes [to look] straight forward, and see where thou hast not been utterly defiled. Thou hast sat for them by the wayside as a deserted crow, and hast defiled the land with thy fornications and thy wickedness.

 3:2 Lift upºº thine eyesº untoº the high places,º and seeºº whereº thou hast notº been lienºººº with. Inº the waysº hast thou satºº for them, as the Arabianº in the wilderness;º and thou hast pollutedºº the landº with thy whoredomsº and with thy wickedness.º

 3:3 And thou didst retain many shepherds for a stumbling-block to thyself: thou hadst a whore's face, thou didst become shameless toward all.

 3:3 Therefore the showersº have been withholden,ºº and there hath beenº noº latter rain;º and thou hadst a whore'sººº forehead,º thou refusedstºº to be ashamed.ºº

 3:4 Hast thou not called me as it were a home, and the father and guide of thy virgin-time?

 3:4 Wilt thou notº from this timeºº cryºº unto me, My father,º thouº [art] the guideº of my youth?º

 3:5 Will [God's anger] continue for ever, or be preserved to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done these bad things, and hadst power [to do them].

 3:5 Will he reserveºº [his anger] for ever?º will he keepºº [it] to the end?º Behold,º thou hast spokenºº and doneºº evil thingsº as thou couldest.ºº

 3:6 ¶ And the Lord said to me in the days of Josiah{gr.Josias} the king, Hast thou seen what things the house of Israel has done to me? they have gone on every high mountain, and under every shady tree, and have committed fornication there.

 3:6 ¶ Yahwehº saidºº also untoº me in the daysº of Josiahº the king,º Hast thou seenºº [that] whichº backslidingº Israelº hath done?ºº sheº is gone upºº uponº everyº highº mountainº and underº everyº greenº tree,º and thereº hath played the harlot.ºº

 3:7 And I said after she had committed all these acts of fornication, Turn again to me. Yet she returned not. And faithless Judah{gr.Juda} saw her faithlessness.

 3:7 And I saidºº afterº she had doneººº allº theseº [things], Turnºº thou untoº me. But she returnedºº not.º And her treacherousº sisterº Judahº sawºº [it].

 3:8 And I saw that (for all the sins of which she was convicted, wherein the house of Israel committed adultery, and I put her away, and gave into her hands a bill of divorcement,) yet faithless Judah{gr.Juda} feared not, but went and herself also committed fornication.

 3:8 And I saw,ºº whenº forº allº the causesº wherebyº backslidingº Israelº committed adulteryºº I had put her away,ºº and givenººº herº a billº of divorce;º yet her treacherousºº sisterº Judahº fearedºº not,º but wentººº and played the harlotºº also.º

 3:9 And her fornication was nothing accounted of; and she committed adultery with wood and stone.

 3:9 And it came to passº through the lightnessºº of her whoredom,º that she defiledººº the land,º and committed adulteryºº withº stonesº and withº stocks.º

 3:10 And for all these things faithless Judah{gr.Juda} turned not to me with all her heart, but falsely.

 3:10 And yetº for allº thisº her treacherousº sisterº Judahº hath notº turnedºº untoº me with her wholeº heart,º butºº feignedly,º saithºº Yahweh.º

 3:11 And the Lord said to me, Israel has justified himself more than faithless Judah{gr.Juda}.

 3:11 And Yahwehº saidºº untoº me, The backslidingº Israelº hath justifiedºº herselfº more than treacherousººº Judah.º

 3:12 ¶ Go and read these words toward the north, and thou shalt say, Return to me, O house of Israel, saith the Lord; and I will not set my face against you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not be angry with you for ever.

 3:12 ¶ Goºº and proclaimººº theseº wordsº toward the north,º and say,ºº Return,ºº thou backslidingº Israel,º saithºº Yahweh;º [and] I will notº cause mine angerº to fallºº upon you: forº Iº [am] merciful,º saithºº Yahweh,º [and] I will notº keepºº [anger] for ever.º

 3:13 Nevertheless, know thine iniquity, that thou hast sinned against the Lord thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to strangers under every shady tree, but thou didst not hearken to my voice, saith the Lord.

 3:13 Onlyº acknowledgeºº thine iniquity,º thatº thou hast transgressedºº against Yahwehº thy Elohim,º and hast scatteredººº thy waysº to the strangersºº underº everyº greenº tree,º and ye have notº obeyedºº my voice,º saithºº Yahweh.º

 3:14 Turn, ye children that have revolted, saith the Lord; for I will rule over you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you in to Zion{gr.Sion}:

 3:14 Turn,ºº O backslidingº children,º saithºº Yahweh;º forº Iº am marriedºº unto you: and I will takeºº you oneº of a city,ºº and twoº of a family,ºº and I will bringºº you to Zion:º

 3:15 and I will give you shepherds after my heart, and they shall certainly tend you with knowledge.

 3:15 And I will giveºº you pastorsºº according to mine heart,º which shall feedºº you with knowledgeº and understanding.ºº

 3:16 And it shall come to pass that when ye are multiplied and increased upon the land, saith the Lord, in those days they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the Holy One of Israel: it shall not come to mind; it shall not be named; neither shall it be visited; nor shall [this] be done any more.

 3:16 And it shall come to pass,º whenº ye be multipliedºº and increasedºº in the land,º in thoseº days,º saithºº Yahweh,º they shall sayºº noº more,º The arkº of the covenantº of Yahweh:º neitherº shall it comeºº toº mind:º neitherº shall they rememberºº it; neitherº shall they visitºº [it]; neitherº shall [that] be doneºº any more.º

 3:17 In those days and at that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord; and all the nations shall be gathered to it: and they shall not walk any more after the imaginations of their evil heart.

 3:17 At thatº timeº they shall callºº Jerusalemº the throneº of Yahweh;º and allº the nationsº shall be gatheredºº untoº it, to the nameº of Yahweh,º to Jerusalem:º neitherº shall they walkººº any moreº afterº the imaginationº of their evilº heart.º

 3:18 In those days the house of Judah{gr.Juda}, shall come together to the house of Israel, and they shall come, together, from the land of the north, and from all the countries, to the land, which I caused their fathers to inherit.

 3:18 In thoseº daysº the houseº of Judahº shall walkººº withº the houseº of Israel,º and they shall comeºº togetherº out of the landºº of the northº toº the landº thatº I have given for an inheritanceºº untoº your fathers.º

 3:19 And I said, So be it, Lord, for [thou saidst] I will set thee among children, and will give thee a choice land, the inheritance of the Almighty God of the Gentiles: and I said, Ye shall call me Father; and ye shall not turn away from me.

 3:19 But Iº said,ºº Howº shall I putºº thee among the children,º and giveºº thee a pleasantº land,º a goodlyº heritageº of the hostsº of nations?º and I said,ºº Thou shalt callºº me, My father;º and shalt notº turn awayºº fromºº me.º

 3:20 ¶ But as a wife acts treacherously against her husband, so has the house of Israel dealt treacherously against me, saith the Lord.

 3:20 ¶ Surelyº [as] a wifeº treacherouslyºº departethº from her husband,ººº soº have ye dealt treacherouslyºº with me, O houseº of Israel,º saithºº Yahweh.º

 3:21 A voice from the lips was heard, [even] of weeping and supplication of the children of Israel: for they have dealt unrighteously in their ways, they have forgotten God their Holy One.

 3:21 A voiceº was heardºº uponº the high places,º weepingº [and] supplicationsº of the childrenº of Israel:º forº they have pervertedººº their way,º [and] they have forgottenººº Yahwehº their Elohim.º

 3:22 Turn, ye children that are given to turning, and I will heal your bruises. Behold, we will be thy servants; for thou art the Lord our God.

 3:22 Return,ºº ye backslidingº children,º [and] I will healºº your backslidings.º Behold,º we comeºº unto thee; forº thouº [art] Yahwehº our Elohim.º

 3:23 Truly the hills and the strength of the mountains were a lying refuge: but by the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel.

 3:23 Trulyº in vainº [is salvation hoped for] from the hills,ºº [and from] the multitudeº of mountains:º trulyº in Yahwehº our Elohimº [is] the salvationº of Israel.º

 3:24 But shame has consumed the labours of our fathers from our youth; their sheep and their calves, and their sons and their daughters.

 3:24 For shameº hath devouredººº the labourº of our fathersº from our youth;ººº their flocksº and their herds,ºº their sonsº and their daughters.º

 3:25 We have lain down in our shame, and our disgrace has covered us: because we and our fathers have sinned before our God, from our youth until this day; and we have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord our God.

 3:25 We lie downºº in our shame,º and our confusionº coverethºº us: forº we have sinnedºº against Yahwehº our Elohim,º weº and our fathers,º from our youthºº even untoº thisº day,º and have notº obeyedºº the voiceº of Yahwehº our Elohim.º
