 40:1 ¶ The word that came from the Lord to Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias}, after that Nebuzaradan{gr.Nabuzardan} the captain of the guard had let him go out of Ramah{gr.Rama}, when he had taken him in manacles in the midst of the captivity of Judah{gr.Juda}, [even] those who were carried to Babylon.

 40:1 ¶ The wordº thatº cameº toº Jeremiahº fromºº Yahweh,º afterº thatº Nebuzaradanº the captainº of the guardº had let him goºº fromº Ramah,º when he had takenºº him being boundºº in chainsº amongº allº that were carried away captiveº of Jerusalemº and Judah,º which were carried away captiveºº unto Babylon.º

 40:2 And the chief captain of the guard took him, and said to him, The Lord thy God has pronounced all these evils upon this place:

 40:2 And the captainº of the guardº tookºº Jeremiah,º and saidºº untoº him, Yahwehº thy Elohimº hath pronouncedººº thisº evilº uponº thisº place.º

 40:3 and the Lord has done it; because ye sinned against him, and hearkened not to his voice.

 40:3 Now Yahwehº hath broughtºº [it], and doneºº according asº he hath said:ºº becauseº ye have sinnedºº against Yahweh,º and have notº obeyedºº his voice,º therefore thisº thingº is comeº upon you.

 40:4 Behold, I have loosed thee from the manacles that were upon thine hands. If it seem good to thee to go with me to Babylon, then will I set mine eyes upon thee.

 40:4 And now,º behold,º I looseºº thee this dayº fromº the chainsº whichº [were] uponº thine hand.º Ifº it seem goodºº unto theeºº to comeºº withº me into Babylon,º come;ºº and I will look wellºººº untoº thee: but ifº it seem illººº unto theeºº to comeºº withº me into Babylon,º forbear:ºº behold,ºº allº the landº [is] beforeº thee: whitherº it seemethºº goodº and convenientºº for thee to go,ººº thitherº go.ººº

 40:5 But if not, depart; return to Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} the son of Ahikam{gr.Achicam}, the son of Shaphan{gr.Saphan}, whom the king of Babylon has appointed governor in the land of Judah{gr.Juda}, and dwell with him in the midst of the people in the land of Judah{gr.Juda}: to whatsoever places it seems good in thine eyes to go, do thou even go. And the captain of the guard made him presents, and let him go.

 40:5 Now while he was notº yetº gone back,ºº [he said], Go backºº also toº Gedaliahº the sonº of Ahikamº the sonº of Shaphan,º whomº the kingº of Babylonº hath made governorºº over the citiesº of Judah,º and dwellºº withº him amongº the people:º orº goººº wheresoeverºº it seemethº convenientºº unto thee to go.ººº So the captainº of the guardº gaveºº him victualsº and a reward,º and let him go.ºº

 40:6 And he came to Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} to Mizpeh{gr.Massepha}, and dwelt in the midst of his people that was left in the land.

 40:6 Then wentºº Jeremiahº untoº Gedaliahº the sonº of Ahikamº to Mizpah;º and dweltºº withº him amongº the peopleº that were leftºº in the land.º

 40:7 ¶ And all the leaders of the host that was in the country, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} [governor] in the land, and they committed to him the men and their wives, whom [Nebuchadnezzar{gr.Nabuchodonosor} had] not removed to Babylon.

 40:7 ¶ Now when allº the captainsº of the forcesº whichº [were] in the fields,º [even] theyº and their men,ºº heardºº thatº the kingº of Babylonº had madeº Gedaliahº the sonº of Ahikamº governorºº in the land,º andº had committedºº untoº him men,ºº and women,º and children,º and of the poorºº of the land,º of them thatºº were notº carried away captiveºº to Babylon;º

 40:8 And there came to Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} to Mizpeh{gr.Massepha} Ishmael{gr.Ismael} the son of Nethaniah{gr.Nathanias}, and Johanan{gr.Joanan} son of Caree, and Seraiah{gr.Saraeas} the son of Thanaemeth, and the sons of Jophe the Netophathite, and Ezonias son of the Mochathite, they and their men.

 40:8 Then they cameºº toº Gedaliahº to Mizpah,º even Ishmaelº the sonº of Nethaniah,º and Johananº and Jonathanº the sonsº of Kareah,º and Seraiahº the sonº of Tanhumeth,º and the sonsº of Ephaiº the Netophathite,º and Jezaniahº the sonº of a Maachathite,º theyº and their men.ºº

 40:9 And Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} swore to them and to their men, saying, Be not afraid before the children of the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be better for you.

 40:9 And Gedaliahº the sonº of Ahikamº the sonº of Shaphanº swareºº unto them and to their men,ºº saying,ºº Fearºº notº to serveººº the Chaldeans:º dwellº inºº the land,º and serveººº the kingº of Babylon,º and it shall be wellºº with you.

 40:10 And, behold, I dwell in your presence at Mizpeh{gr.Massepha}, to stand before the Chaldeans who shall come against you: and do ye gather grapes, and fruits, and oil, and put [them] into your vessels, and dwell in the cities which ye have obtained possession of.

 40:10 As for me,º behold,º I will dwellºº at Mizpahº to serveººº the Chaldeans,º whichº will comeºº untoº us: but ye,º gatherºº ye wine,º and summer fruits,º and oil,º and putºº [them] in your vessels,º and dwellºº in your citiesº thatº ye have taken.ºº

 40:11 And all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and those [that were] in Edom{gr.Idumea}, and those [that were] in all [the rest of] the country, heard that the king of Babylon [had] granted a remnant to Judah{gr.Juda}, and that he had appointed over them Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} the son of Ahikam{gr.Achicam}.

 40:11 Likewiseº when allº the Jewsº thatº [were] in Moab,º and among the Ammonites,ºº and in Edom,º and thatº [were] in allº the countries,º heardºº thatº the kingº of Babylonº had leftºº a remnantº of Judah,º and thatº he had setºº overº themº Gedaliahº the sonº of Ahikamº the sonº of Shaphan;º

 40:12 And they came to Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} into the land of Judah{gr.Juda}, to Mizpeh{gr.Massepha}, and gathered grapes, and very much summer fruit, and oil.

 40:12 Even allº the Jewsº returnedº outºº of allºº placesº whitherºº they were driven,ºº and cameºº to the landº of Judah,º toº Gedaliah,º unto Mizpah,º and gatheredºº wineº and summer fruitsº veryº much.ººº

 40:13 ¶ And Johanan{gr.Joanan} the son of Caree, and all the leaders of the host, who were in the fields, came to Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} to Mizpeh{gr.Massepha},

 40:13 ¶ Moreover Johananº the sonº of Kareah,º and allº the captainsº of the forcesº thatº [were] in the fields,º cameºº toº Gedaliahº to Mizpah,º

 40:14 and said to him, Dost thou indeed know that king Beleissa son of Ammon has sent Ishmael{gr.Ismael} to thee to slay thee? But Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} believed them not.

 40:14 And saidºº untoº him, Dost thou certainlyºº knowºº thatº Baalisº the kingº of the Ammonitesºº hath sentººº Ishmaelº the sonº of Nethaniahº to slayººº thee? But Gedaliahº the sonº of Ahikamº believedºº them not.º

 40:15 And Johanan{gr.Joanan} said to Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} secretly in Mizpeh{gr.Massepha}, I will go now and smite Ishmael{gr.Ismael}, and let no man know [it]; lest he slay thee, and all the Jews that are gathered to thee be dispersed, and the remnant of Judah{gr.Juda} perish.

 40:15 Then Johananº the sonº of Kareahº spakeºº toº Gedaliahº in Mizpahº secretly,º saying,ºº Let me go,ººº I pray thee,º and I will slayººº Ishmaelº the sonº of Nethaniah,º and noº manº shall knowºº [it]: whereforeº should he slayººº thee, that allº the Jewsºº which are gatheredºº untoº thee should be scattered,ºº and the remnantº in Judahº perish?ºº

 40:16 But Gedaliah{gr.Godolias} said to Johanan{gr.Joanan}, Do not the thing, for thou speakest lies concerning Ishmael{gr.Ismael}.

 40:16 But Gedaliahº the sonº of Ahikamº saidºº untoº Johananº the sonº of Kareah,º Thou shalt notº doººº thisº thing:º forº thouº speakestºº falselyº ofº Ishmael.º
