 1:1 ¶ The word of God which came to Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias} the [son] of Hilkiah{gr.Chelcias}, of the priests, who dwelt in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:

 1:1 ¶ The wordsº of Jeremiahº the sonº of Hilkiah,º ofº the priestsº thatº [were] in Anathothº in the landº of Benjamin:º

 1:2 [accordingly] as the word of God came to him in the days of Josiah{gr.Josias} son of Amos king of Judah{gr.Juda}, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

 1:2 To whomº the wordº of Yahwehº cameº in the daysº of Josiahº the sonº of Amonº kingº of Judah,º in the thirteenthºº yearº of his reign.ºº

 1:3 And it was in the days of Jehoiakim{gr.Joakim}, son of Josiah{gr.Josias} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, until the eleventh year of Zedekiah{gr.Sedekias} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, [even] until the captivity of Jerusalem in the fifth month.

 1:3 It cameº also in the daysº of Jehoiakimº the sonº of Josiahº kingº of Judah,º untoº the endºº of the eleventhºº yearº of Zedekiahº the sonº of Josiahº kingº of Judah,º untoº the carrying awayºº of Jerusalemº captiveºº in the fifthº month.º

 1:4 And the word of the Lord came to him, [saying],

 1:4 Then the wordº of Yahwehº cameº untoº me, saying,ºº

 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth from the womb, I sanctified thee; I appointed thee a prophet to the nations.

 1:5 Beforeº I formedºº thee in the bellyº I knewºº thee; and beforeº thou camest forthºº out of the wombºº I sanctifiedºº thee, [and] I ordainedºº thee a prophetº unto the nations.º

 1:6 And I said, O Lord, thou that art supreme Lord, behold, I know not [how] to speak, for I am a child.

 1:6 Then saidºº I, Ah,º Adonaiº Yahweh!º behold,º I cannotººº speak:ºº forº Iº [am] a child.º

 1:7 ¶ And the Lord said to me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all to whomsoever I shall send thee, and according to all [the words] that I shall command thee, thou shalt speak.

 1:7 ¶ But Yahwehº saidºº untoº me, Sayºº not,º Iº [am] a child:º forº thou shalt goººº toº allº thatº I shall sendºº thee, and whatsoeverºº I commandºº thee thou shalt speak.ºº

 1:8 Be not afraid before them: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

 1:8 Be notº afraidºº of their faces:ºº forº Iº [am] withº thee to deliverºº thee, saithºº Yahweh.º

 1:9 And the Lord stretched forth his hand to me, and touched my mouth: and the Lord said to me, Behold, I have put my words into thy mouth.

 1:9 Then Yahwehº put forthººº his hand,º and touchedººº my mouth.º And Yahwehº saidºº untoº me, Behold,º I have putºº my wordsº in thy mouth.º

 1:10 Behold, I have appointed thee this day over nations and over kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to rebuild, and to plant.

 1:10 See,ºº I have thisº dayº setºº thee overº the nationsº and overº the kingdoms,º to root out,ºº and to pull down,ºº and to destroy,ºº and to throw down,ºº to build,ºº and to plant.ºº

 1:11 ¶ And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, What seest thou? And I said, A rod of an almond tree.

 1:11 ¶ Moreover the wordº of Yahwehº cameº untoº me, saying,ºº Jeremiah,º whatº seestºº thou?º And I said,ºº Iº seeºº a rodº of an almond tree.º

 1:12 And the Lord said to me, Thou hast well seen: for I have watched over my words to perform them.

 1:12 Then saidºº Yahwehº untoº me, Thou hast wellºº seen:ºº forº Iº will hastenººº my wordº to performºº it.

 1:13 And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, A caldron on the fire; and the face of it is toward the north.

 1:13 And the wordº of Yahwehº cameº untoº me the second time,º saying,ºº Whatº seestºº thou?º And I said,ºº Iº seeºº a seethingºº pot;º and the faceº thereof [is] towardºº the north.º

 1:14 And the Lord said to me, From the north shall flame forth evils upon all the inhabitants of the land.

 1:14 Then Yahwehº saidºº untoº me, Out of the northºº an evilº shall break forthºº uponº allº the inhabitantsºº of the land.º

 1:15 For, behold, I call together all the kingdoms of the earth from the north, saith the Lord; and they shall come, and shall set each one his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls round about her, and against all the cities of Judah{gr.Juda}.

 1:15 For,º lo,º I will callºº allº the familiesº of the kingdomsº of the north,º saithºº Yahweh;º and they shall come,ºº and they shall setºº every oneº his throneº at the enteringº of the gatesº of Jerusalem,º and againstº allº the wallsº thereof round about,º and againstº allº the citiesº of Judah.º

 1:16 And I will speak to them in judgment, concerning all their iniquity, [forasmuch] as they have forsaken me, and sacrificed to strange gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.

 1:16 And I will utterºº my judgmentsº against them touchingº allº their wickedness,º whoº have forsakenºº me, and have burned incenseºº unto otherº elohim,º and worshippedºº the worksº of their own hands.º

 1:17 ¶ And do thou gird up thy loins, and stand up, and speak all [the words] that I shall command thee: be not afraid of their face, neither be thou alarmed before them; for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

 1:17 ¶ Thouº therefore gird upºº thy loins,º and arise,ºº and speakºº untoº themº allº thatº Iº commandºº thee: be notº dismayedºº at their faces,ºº lestº I confoundºº thee beforeº them.

 1:18 Behold, I have made thee this day as a strong city, and as a brazen wall, strong [against] all the kings of Judah{gr.Juda}, and the princes thereof, and the people of the land.

 1:18 For,º behold,º Iº have madeºº thee this dayº a defencedº city,º and an ironº pillar,º and brasenº wallsº againstº the wholeº land,º against the kingsº of Judah,º against the princesº thereof, against the priestsº thereof, and against the peopleº of the land.º

 1:19 And they shall fight against thee; but they shall by no means prevail against thee; because I am with thee, to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

 1:19 And they shall fightºº againstº thee; but they shall notº prevailºº against thee; forº Iº [am] withº thee, saithºº Yahweh,º to deliverºº thee.
