 23:1 ¶
THE WORD CONCERNING TYRE. Howl, ye ships of Carthage; for she has perished, and [men] no longer arrive from the land of the Citians: she is led captive. |
|
 23:1 ¶
The burdenº
of Tyre.º
Howl,ºº
ye shipsº
of Tarshish;º
forº
it is laid waste,ºº
so that there is no house,ºº
no entering in:ººº
from the landºº
of Chittimº
it is revealedºº
to them. |
 23:2
To whom are the dwellers in the island become like, the merchants of Zidon{gr.Phoenice}, passing over the sea |
|
 23:2
Be still,ºº
ye inhabitantsºº
of the isle;º
thou whom the merchantsºº
of Zidon,º
that pass overºº
the sea,º
have replenished.ºº |
 23:3
in great waters, a generation of merchants? as when the harvest is gathered in, [so are] these traders with the nations. |
|
 23:3
And by greatº
watersº
the seedº
of Sihor,º
the harvestº
of the river,º
[is] her revenue;º
and she isº
a martº
of nations.º |
 23:4
Be ashamed, O Zidon{gr.Sidon}: the sea has said, yea, the strength of the sea has said, I have not travailed, nor brought forth, nor have I brought up young men, nor reared virgins. |
|
 23:4
Be thou ashamed,ºº
O Zidon:º
forº
the seaº
hath spoken,ºº
[even] the strengthº
of the sea,º
saying,ºº
I travailºº
not,º
norº
bring forth children,ºº
neitherº
do I nourish upºº
young men,º
[nor] bring upºº
virgins.º |
 23:5
Moreover when it shall be heard in Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, sorrow shall seize them for Tyre. |
|
 23:5
Asº
at the reportº
concerning Egypt,º
[so] shall they be sorely painedºº
at the reportº
of Tyre.º |
 23:6
Depart ye to Carthage; howl, ye that dwell in this island. |
|
 23:6
Pass ye overºº
to Tarshish;º
howl,ºº
ye inhabitantsºº
of the isle.º |
 23:7
Was not this your pride from the beginning, before she was given up? |
|
 23:7
[Is] thisº
your joyousº
[city], whose antiquityº
[is] of ancientº
days?ºº
her own feetº
shall carryºº
her afar offºº
to sojourn.ºº |
 23:8
Who has devised this counsel against Tyre? Is she inferior? or has she no strength? her merchants were the glorious princes of the earth. |
|
 23:8
Whoº
hath taken this counselººº
againstº
Tyre,º
the crowningºº
[city], whoseº
merchantsºº
[are] princes,º
whose traffickersºº
[are] the honourableºº
of the earth?º |
 23:9
The Lord of hosts has purposed to bring down all the pride of the glorious ones, and to disgrace every glorious thing on the earth. |
|
 23:9
Yahwehº
Sabaothº
hath purposedºº
it, to stainºº
the prideº
of allº
glory,º
[and] to bring into contemptºº
allº
the honourableºº
of the earth.º |
 23:10
Till thy land; for ships no more come out of Carthage. |
|
 23:10
Passºº
throughº
thy landº
as a river,º
O daughterº
of Tarshish:º
[there is] noº
moreº
strength.º |
 23:11
And thy hand prevails no more by sea, which troubled kings: the Lord of hosts has given a command concerning Canaan{gr.Chanaan}, to destroy the strength thereof. |
|
 23:11
He stretched outºº
his handº
overº
the sea,º
he shookºº
the kingdoms:º
Yahwehº
hath given a commandmentºº
againstº
the merchantº
[city], to destroyºº
the strongº
holdsº
thereof. |
 23:12
And [men] shall say, Ye shall no longer at all continue to insult and injure the daughter of Zidon{gr.Sidon}: and if thou depart to the Citians, neither there shalt thou have rest. |
|
 23:12
And he said,ºº
Thou shalt noº
moreººº
rejoice,ºº
O thou oppressedºº
virgin,º
daughterº
of Zidon:º
arise,ºº
pass overºº
to Chittim;º
thereº
alsoº
shalt thou have no rest.ººº |
 23:13
And [if thou depart] to the land of the Chaldeans, this also is laid waste by the Assyrians, for her wall is fallen. |
|
 23:13
Beholdº
the landº
of the Chaldeans;º
thisº
peopleº
wasº
not,º
[till] the Assyrianº
foundedºº
it for them that dwell in the wilderness:º
they set upºº
the towersº
thereof, they raised upºº
the palacesº
thereof; [and] he broughtºº
it to ruin.º |
 23:14
Howl, ye ships of Carthage: for your strong hold is destroyed. |
|
 23:14
Howl,ºº
ye shipsº
of Tarshish:º
forº
your strengthº
is laid waste.ºº |
 23:15
And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] Tyre shall be left seventy years, as the time of a king, as the time of a man: and it shall come to pass after seventy years, [that] Tyre shall be as the song of a harlot. |
|
 23:15
And it shall come to passº
in thatº
day,º
that Tyreº
shall be forgottenºº
seventyº
years,º
according to the daysº
of oneº
king:º
after the endºº
of seventyº
yearsº
shall Tyreº
singº
as an harlot.ºº |
 23:16
Take a harp, go about, O city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; play well on the harp, sing many [songs], that thou mayest be remembered. |
|
 23:16
Takeºº
an harp,º
go aboutºº
the city,º
thou harlotºº
that hast been forgotten;ºº
make sweetºº
melody,ºº
sing manyºº
songs,º
thatº
thou mayest be remembered.ºº |
 23:17 ¶
And it shall come to pass after the seventy years, [that] God will visit Tyre, and she shall be again restored to her primitive state, and she shall be a mart for all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth. |
|
 23:17 ¶
And it shall come to passº
after the endºº
of seventyº
years,º
that Yahwehº
will visitººº
Tyre,º
and she shall turnºº
to her hire,º
and shall commit fornicationºº
withº
allº
the kingdomsº
of the worldº
uponº
the faceº
of the earth.º |
 23:18
And her trade and her gain shall be holiness to the Lord: it shall not be gathered for them, but for those that dwell before the Lord, [even] all her trade, to eat and drink and be filled, and for a covenant [and] a memorial before the Lord. |
|
 23:18
And her merchandiseº
and her hireº
shall beº
holinessº
to Yahweh:º
it shall notº
be treasuredºº
norº
laid up;ºº
forº
her merchandiseº
shall beº
for them that dwellºº
beforeº
Yahweh,º
to eatºº
sufficiently,º
and for durableº
clothing.º |
