 57:1 ¶ See how the just man has perished, and no one lays [it] to heart: and righteous men are taken away, and no one considers: for the righteous has been removed out of the way of injustice.

 57:1 ¶ The righteousº perisheth,ºº and noº manº layethºº [it] toº heart:º and mercifulº menºº [are] taken away,ºº noneº consideringºº thatº the righteousº is taken awayºº fromºº the evilº [to come].

 57:2 His burial shall be in peace: he has been removed out of the way.

 57:2 He shall enterºº into peace:º they shall restºº inº their beds,º [each one] walkingºº [in] his uprightness.º

 57:3 ¶ But draw ye near hither, ye lawless children, the seed of adulterers and the harlot.

 57:3 ¶ But draw nearºº hither,º yeº sonsº of the sorceress,ºº the seedº of the adultererºº and the whore.ºº

 57:4 Wherein have ye been rioting? and against whom have ye opened your mouth, and against whom have ye loosed your tongue? are ye not children of perdition? a lawless seed?

 57:4 Againstº whomº do ye sportºº yourselves?º againstº whomº make ye a wideºº mouth,º [and] draw outºº the tongue?º [are] yeº notº childrenº of transgression,º a seedº of falsehood,º

 57:5 who call upon idols under the leafy trees, slaying your children in the valleys among the rocks?

 57:5 Enflamingºº yourselvesº with elimº underº everyº greenº tree,º slayingºº the childrenº in the valleysº underº the cliftsº of the rocks?º

 57:6 That is thy portion, this is thy lot: and to them hast thou poured forth drink-offerings, and to these hast thou offered meat-offerings. Shall I not therefore be angry for these things?

 57:6 Among the smoothº [stones] of the streamº [is] thy portion;º they,º theyº [are] thy lot:º evenº to them hast thou pouredºº a drink offering,º thou hast offeredºº a meat offering.º Should I receive comfortºº inº these?º

 57:7 On a lofty and high mountain, there is thy bed, and thither thou carriedst up thy meat-offerings:

 57:7 Uponº a loftyº and highºº mountainº hast thou setºº thy bed:º evenº thitherº wentest thou upºº to offerºº sacrifice.º

 57:8 and behind the posts of thy door thou didst place thy memorials. Didst thou think that if thou shouldest depart from me, thou wouldest gain? thou hast loved those that lay with thee;

 57:8 Behindº the doorsº also and the postsº hast thou set upºº thy remembrance:º forº thou hast discoveredºº [thyself to another] thanºº me, and art gone up;ºº thou hast enlargedºº thy bed,º and madeºº thee [a covenant] withº them; thou lovedstºº their bedº whereº thou sawestºº [it].

 57:9 and thou hast multiplied thy whoredom with them, and thou hast increased the number of them that are far from thee, and hast sent ambassadors beyond thy borders, and hast been debased even to hell.

 57:9 And thou wentestºº to the kingº with ointment,º and didst increaseºº thy perfumes,º and didst sendºº thy messengersº far off,ººº and didst debaseºº [thyself even] untoº hell.º

 57:10 Thou hast wearied thyself with thy many ways; yet thou saidst not, I will cease to strengthen myself: for thou has done these things; therefore thou has not supplicated me.

 57:10 Thou art weariedºº in the greatnessº of thy way;º [yet] saidstºº thou not,º There is no hope:ºº thou hast foundºº the lifeº of thine hand;º thereforeºº thou wast notº grieved.ºº

 57:11 Through dread of whom hast thou feared, and lied against me, and has not remembered, nor considered me, nor regarded me, yea, though when I see thee I pass they by, yet thou hast not feared me.

 57:11 And of whomº hast thou been afraidºº or feared,ºº thatº thou hast lied,ºº and hast notº rememberedºº me, norº laidºº [it] toº thy heart?º have notº Iº held my peaceºº even of old,ºº and thou fearestºº me not?º

 57:12 And I will declare thy righteousness, and thy sins, which shall not profit thee.

 57:12 Iº will declareºº thy righteousness,º and thy works;º for they shall notº profitºº thee.

 57:13 ¶ When thou criest out, let them deliver thee in thine affliction: for all these the wind shall take, and the tempest shall carry [them] away: but they that cleave to me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain.

 57:13 ¶ When thou criest,ºº let thy companiesº deliverºº thee; but the windº shall carry them all away;ºººº vanityº shall takeºº [them]: but he that putteth his trustºº in me shall possessºº the land,º and shall inheritºº my holyº mountain;º

 57:14 And they shall say, Clear the ways before him, and take up the stumbling-blocks out of the way of my people.

 57:14 And shall say,ºº Cast ye up,ºº cast ye up,ºº prepareºº the way,º take upºº the stumblingblockº out of the wayºº of my people.º

 57:15 Thus saith the Most High, who dwells on high for ever, Holy in the holies, is his name, the Most High resting in the holies, and giving patience to the faint-hearted, and giving life to the broken-hearted:

 57:15 Forº thusº saithºº the highºº and lofty Oneºº that inhabitethºº eternity,º whose nameº [is] Holy;º I dwellºº in the highº and holyº [place], withº him also [that is] of a contriteº and humbleº spirit,º to reviveºº the spiritº of the humble,º and to reviveºº the heartº of the contrite ones.ºº

 57:16 I will not take vengeance on you for ever, neither will I be always angry with you: for my Spirit shall go forth from me, and I have created all breath.

 57:16 Forº I will notº contendºº for ever,º neitherº will I be alwaysº wroth:ººº forº the spiritº should failºº beforeºº me, and the soulsº [which] Iº have made.ºº

 57:17 On account of sin for a little while I grieved him, and smote him, and turned away my face from him; and he was grieved, and he went on sorrowful in his ways.

 57:17 For the iniquityº of his covetousnessº was I wroth,ºº and smoteºº him: I hidºº me, and was wroth,ºº and he wentº onºº frowardlyº in the wayº of his heart.º

 57:18 I have seen his ways, and healed him, and comforted him, and given him true comfort;

 57:18 I have seenºº his ways,º and will healºº him: I will leadºº him also, and restoreºº comfortsº unto him and to his mourners.º

 57:19 peace upon peace to them that are far off, and to them that are nigh: and the Lord has said, I will heal them.

 57:19 I createºº the fruitº of the lips;º Peace,º peaceº to [him that is] far off,º and to [him that is] near,º saithºº Yahweh;º and I will healºº him.

 57:20 But the unrighteous shall be tossed as troubled waves, and shall not be able to rest.

 57:20 But the wickedº [are] like the troubledºº sea,º whenº it cannotººº rest,ºº whose watersº cast upºº mireº and dirt.º

 57:21 There is no joy to the ungodly, said God.

 57:21 [There is] noº peace,º saithºº my Elohim,º to the wicked.º
