 47:1 ¶ Come down, sit on the ground, O virgin daughter of Babylon: sit on the ground, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and luxurious.

 47:1 ¶ Come down,ºº and sitºº inº the dust,º O virginº daughterº of Babylon,º sitºº on the ground:º [there is] noº throne,º O daughterº of the Chaldeans:º forº thou shalt noº moreºº be calledºº tenderº and delicate.º

 47:2 Take a millstone, grind meal: remove thy veil, uncover thy white hairs, make bare the leg, pass through the rivers.

 47:2 Takeºº the millstones,º and grindºº meal:º uncoverºº thy locks,º make bareºº the leg,º uncoverºº the thigh,º pass overºº the rivers.º

 47:3 Thy shame shall be uncovered, thy reproaches shall be brought to light: I will exact of thee due vengeance, I will no longer deliver thee to men.

 47:3 Thy nakednessº shall be uncovered,ºº yea,º thy shameº shall be seen:ºº I will takeºº vengeance,º and I will notº meetºº [thee as] a man.º

 47:4 Thy deliverer is the Lord of hosts, the Holy One of Israel is his name.

 47:4 [As for] our redeemer,ºº Yahwehº Sabaothº [is] his name,º the Holy Oneº of Israel.º

 47:5 Sit thou down pierced with woe, go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: thou shalt no more be called the strength of a kingdom.

 47:5 Sitºº thou silent,º and getºº thee into darkness,º O daughterº of the Chaldeans:º forº thou shalt noº moreºº be called,ºº The ladyº of kingdoms.º

 47:6 ¶ I have been provoked with my people; thou hast defiled mine inheritance: I gave them into thy hand, but thou didst not extend mercy to them: thou madest the yoke of the aged man very heavy,

 47:6 ¶ I was wrothºº withº my people,º I have pollutedºº mine inheritance,º and givenºº them into thine hand:º thou didst shewºº them noº mercy;º uponº the ancientº hast thou veryº heavilyºº laidº thy yoke.º

 47:7 ¶ and saidst, I shall be a princess for ever: thou didst not perceive these things in thine heart, nor didst thou remember the latter end.

 47:7 ¶ And thou saidst,ºº I shall beº a ladyº for ever:º [so] thatº thou didst notº layºº theseº [things] toº thy heart,º neitherº didst rememberºº the latter endº of it.

 47:8 But now hear these words, thou luxurious one, [who art] the one that sits [at ease], that is secure, that says in her heart, I am, and there is not another; I shall not sit a widow, neither shall I know bereavement.

 47:8 Therefore hearºº nowº this,º [thou that art] given to pleasures,º that dwellestºº carelessly,º that sayestºº in thine heart,º Iº [am], and none elseº besideºº me; I shall notº sitºº [as] a widow,º neitherº shall I knowºº the loss of children:º

 47:9 But now these two things shall come upon thee suddenly in one day, the loss of children and widowhood shall come suddenly upon thee, for thy sorcery, for the strength of thine enchantments,

 47:9 But theseº twoº [things] shall comeºº to thee in a momentº in oneº day,º the loss of children,º and widowhood:º they shall comeºº uponº thee in their perfectionº for the multitudeº of thy sorceries,º [and] for the greatº abundanceº of thine enchantments.º

 47:10 ¶ for thy trusting in wickedness: for thou saidst, I am, and there is not another: know thou, the understanding of these things and thy harlotry shall be thy shame; for thou saidst in thy heart, I am, and there is not another.

 47:10 ¶ For thou hast trustedºº in thy wickedness:º thou hast said,ºº Noneº seethºº me. Thy wisdomº and thy knowledge,º itº hath pervertedºº thee; and thou hast saidºº in thine heart,º Iº [am], and none elseº besideºº me.

 47:11 ¶ And destruction shall come upon thee, and thou shalt not be aware; [there shall be a] pit, and thou shalt fall into it: and grief shall come upon thee, and thou shalt not be able to be clear; and destruction shall come suddenly upon thee, and thou shalt not know.

 47:11 ¶ Therefore shall evilº comeºº uponº thee; thou shalt notº knowºº from whence it riseth:º and mischiefº shall fallºº uponº thee; thou shalt notº be ableºº to put it off:ºº and desolationº shall comeºº uponº thee suddenly,º [which] thou shalt notº know.ºº

 47:12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the abundance of thy sorcery, which thou hast learned from thy youth; if thou canst be profited.

 47:12 Standºº nowº with thine enchantments,º and with the multitudeº of thy sorceries,º whereinº thou hast labouredºº from thy youth;ºº if so beº thou shalt be ableºº to profit,ºº if so beº thou mayest prevail.ºº

 47:13 Thou art wearied in thy counsels. Let now the astrologers of the heaven stand and deliver thee, let them that see the stars tell thee what is about to come upon thee.

 47:13 Thou art weariedºº in the multitudeº of thy counsels.º Let nowº the astrologers,ººº the stargazers,ººº the monthlyº prognosticators,ºº stand up,ºº and saveºº thee from [these things] thatºº shall comeºº uponº thee.

 47:14 Behold, they all shall be burnt up as sticks in the fire; neither shall they at all deliver their life from the flame. Because thou hast coals of fire, sit thou upon them;

 47:14 Behold,º they shall beº as stubble;º the fireº shall burnºº them; they shall notº deliverººº themselvesº from the powerºº of the flame:º [there shall] notº [be] a coalº to warmºº at, [nor] fireº to sitºº beforeº it.

 47:15 these shall be thy help. Thou hast wearied thyself with traffic from thy youth: every man has wandered to his own home, but thou shalt have no deliverance.

 47:15 Thusº shall they beº unto thee with whomº thou hast laboured,ºº [even] thy merchants,ºº from thy youth:ºº they shall wanderºº every oneº to his quarter;º noneº shall saveºº thee.
