 9:1 ¶
and he that is in anguish shall not be distressed only for a time. Drink this first. Act quickly, O land of Zebulun{gr.Zabulon}, land of Naphtali{gr.Nephthalim}, and the rest [inhabiting] the sea-coast, and [the land] beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. |
|
 9:1 ¶
Neverthelessº
the dimnessº
[shall] notº
[be] such asº
[was] in her vexation,º
whenº
at the firstº
he lightly afflictedºº
the landº
of Zebulunº
and the landº
of Naphtali,º
and afterwardº
did more grievously afflictºº
[her by] the wayº
of the sea,º
beyondº
Jordan,º
in Galileeº
of the nations.º |
 9:2
O people walking in darkness, behold a great light: ye that dwell in the region [and] shadow of death, a light shall shine upon you. |
|
 9:2
The peopleº
that walkedºº
in darknessº
have seenºº
a greatº
light:º
they that dwellºº
in the landº
of the shadow of death,º
uponº
them hath the lightº
shined.ºº |
 9:3
The multitude of the people which thou hast brought down in thy joy, they shall even rejoice before thee as they that rejoice in harvest, and as they that divide the spoil. |
|
 9:3
Thou hast multipliedºº
the nation,º
[and] notº
increasedºº
the joy:º
they joyºº
beforeº
thee according to the joyº
in harvest,º
[and] asº
[men] rejoiceºº
when they divideºº
the spoil.º |
 9:4
Because the yoke that was laid upon them has been taken away, and the rod that was on their neck: for he has broken the rod of the exactors, as in the day of Midian{gr.Madiam}. |
|
 9:4
Forº
thou hast brokenººº
the yokeº
of his burden,º
and the staffº
of his shoulder,º
the rodº
of his oppressor,ºº
as in the dayº
of Midian.º |
 9:5
For they shall compensate for every garment that has been acquired by deceit, and [all] raiment with restitution; and they shall be willing, [even] if they were burnt with fire. |
|
 9:5
Forº
everyº
battleº
of the warriorºº
[is] with confused noise,º
and garmentsº
rolledºº
in blood;º
but [this] shall beº
with burningº
[and] fuelº
of fire.º |
 9:6
For a child is born to us, and a son is given to us, whose government is upon his shoulder: and his name is called the Messenger of great counsel: for I will bring peace upon the princes, and health to him. |
|
 9:6
Forº
unto us a childº
is born,ºº
unto us a sonº
is given:ºº
and the governmentº
shall be uponº
his shoulder:º
and his nameº
shall beº
calledºº
Wonderful,º
Counsellor,ºº
The mightyº
El,º
The everlastingº
Father,º
The Princeº
of Peace.º |
 9:7
His government shall be great, and of his peace there is no end: [it shall be] upon the throne of David, and [upon] his kingdom, to establish it, and to support [it] with judgement and with righteousness, from henceforth and forever. The seal of the Lord of hosts shall perform this. |
|
 9:7
Of the increaseº
of [his] governmentº
and peaceº
[there shall be] noº
end,º
uponº
the throneº
of David,º
and uponº
his kingdom,º
to orderºº
it, and to establishºº
it with judgmentº
and with justiceº
from henceforthºº
even forº
ever.ºº
The zealº
of Yahwehº
Sabaothº
will performºº
this.º |
 9:8 ¶
The Lord has sent death upon Jacob, and it has come upon Israel. |
|
 9:8 ¶
Yahwehº
sentºº
a wordº
into Jacob,º
and it hath lightedºº
upon Israel.º |
 9:9
And all the people of Ephraim, and they that dwelt in Samaria shall know, who say in their pride and lofty heart, |
|
 9:9
And allº
the peopleº
shall know,ºº
[even] Ephraimº
and the inhabitantºº
of Samaria,º
that sayºº
in the prideº
and stoutnessº
of heart,º |
 9:10
The bricks are fallen down, but come, let us hew stones, and cut down sycamores and cedars, and let us build for ourselves a tower. |
|
 9:10
The bricksº
are fallen down,ºº
but we will buildºº
with hewn stones:º
the sycomoresº
are cut down,ºº
but we will changeºº
[them into] cedars.º |
 9:11
And God shall dash down them that rise up against him on mount Zion{gr.Sion}, and shall scatter his enemies; |
|
 9:11
Therefore Yahwehº
shall set upººº
the adversariesº
of Rezinº
againstº
him, and joinºº
his enemiesºº
together;ºººº |
 9:12
[even] Syria from the rising of the sun, and the Greeks from the setting of the sun, who devour Israel with open mouth. For all this [his] anger is not turned away, but still [his] hand is exalted. |
|
 9:12
The Syriansº
before,ºº
and the Philistinesº
behind;ºº
and they shall devourººº
Israelº
with openº
mouth.º
For allº
thisº
his angerº
is notº
turned away,ºº
but his handº
[is] stretched outº
still.ººº |
 9:13 ¶
But the people turned not until they were smitten, and they sought not the Lord. |
|
 9:13 ¶
For the peopleº
turnethºº
notº
untoº
him that smitethºº
them, neitherº
do they seekºº
Yahwehº
Sabaoth.º |
 9:14
So the Lord took away from Israel the head and tail, great and small, in one day: |
|
 9:14
Therefore Yahwehº
will cut offºº
from Israelºº
headº
and tail,º
branchº
and rush,º
in oneº
day.º |
 9:15
the old man, and them that respect persons, this is the head; and the prophet teaching unlawful things, he is the tail. |
|
 9:15
The ancientº
and honourable,ººº
heº
[is] the head;º
and the prophetº
that teachethºº
lies,º
heº
[is] the tail.º |
 9:16
And they that pronounce this people blessed shall mislead them; and they mislead them that they may devour them. |
|
 9:16
For the leadersºº
of thisº
peopleº
cause [them] to err;ºº
and [they that are] ledºº
of them [are] destroyed.ºº |
 9:17
Therefore the Lord shall not take pleasure in their young men, neither shall he have pity on their orphans or on their widows: for they are all transgressors and wicked, and every mouth speaks unjustly. For all this [his] anger is not turned away, but [his] hand is yet exalted. |
|
 9:17
Thereforeºº
Yahwehº
shall have noº
joyºº
inº
their young men,º
neitherº
shall have mercyºº
on their fatherlessº
and widows:º
forº
every oneº
[is] an hypocriteº
and an evildoer,ºº
and everyº
mouthº
speakethºº
folly.º
For allº
thisº
his angerº
is notº
turned away,ºº
but his handº
[is] stretched outº
still.ººº |
 9:18 ¶
And iniquity shall burn as fire, and shall be devoured by fire as dry grass: and it shall burn in the thickets of the wood, and shall devour all that is round about the hills. |
|
 9:18 ¶
Forº
wickednessº
burnethºº
as the fire:º
it shall devourºº
the briersº
and thorns,º
and shall kindleºº
in the thicketsº
of the forest,º
and they shall mount upºº
[like] the lifting upº
of smoke.º |
 9:19
The whole earth is set on fire because of the fierce anger of the Lord, and the people shall be as men burnt by fire: no man shall pity his brother. |
|
 9:19
Through the wrathº
of Yahwehº
Sabaothº
is the landº
darkened,ºº
and the peopleº
shall beº
as the fuelº
of the fire:º
noº
manº
shall spareººº
his brother.º |
 9:20
But [one] shall turn aside to the right hand, for he shall be hungry; and shall eat on the left, and a man shall by no means be satisfied with eating the flesh of his own arm. |
|
 9:20
And he shall snatchºº
onº
the right hand,º
and be hungry;ºº
and he shall eatºº
onº
the left hand,º
and they shall notº
be satisfied:ºº
they shall eatºº
every manº
the fleshº
of his own arm:º |
 9:21
For Manasseh{gr.Manasses} shall eat [the flesh] of Ephraim, and Ephraim [the flesh] of Manasseh{gr.Manasses}; for they shall besiege Judah{gr.Juda} together. For all this [his] anger is not turned away, but [his] hand is yet exalted. |
|
 9:21
Manasseh,ºº
Ephraim;º
and Ephraim,ºº
Manasseh:º
[and] theyº
togetherº
[shall be] againstº
Judah.º
For allº
thisº
his angerº
is notº
turned away,ºº
but his handº
[is] stretched outº
still.ººº |
