16:1 ¶
Now Saray Avram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, a Mitzri, whose name [was] Hagar. |

אַברָם,º
Beholdº
now,º
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
hath restrainedº
meºº
from bearing:ººº
I pray thee,º
go inºº
untoº
my maid;º
it mayº

that I may obtain childrenºº
byº
her. And

hearkenedºº
to the voiceº
of
§äray
שָׂרַי.º |

And Saray said unto Avram, Behold now, Yahweh hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Avram hearkened to the voice of Saray. |

And Saray Avram's wife took Hagar her maid the Mitzri, after Avram had dwelt ten years in the land of Kenaan, and gave her to her husband Avram to be his wife. |

16:4 ¶
And he went inºº
untoº
Häqär
הָגָר,º
and she conceived:ºº
and when she sawºº
thatº
she had conceived,ºº
her mistressº
was despisedºº
in her eyes.º |

16:4 ¶
And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. |

My wrongº
[be] uponº
thee: Iº
have givenºº
my maidº
into thy bosom;º
and when she sawºº
thatº
she had conceived,ºº
I was despisedºº
in her eyes:º

judgeºº
betweenº
me and thee. |

16:5
And Saray said unto Avram, My wrong [be] upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: Yahweh judge between me and thee. |

שָׂרַי,º
Behold,º
thy maidº
[is] in thy hand;º
doºº
to her as it pleasethºº
thee.ºº
And when
§äray
שָׂרַיº
dealt hardlyº
withºº
her, she fledºº
from her face.ºº |

16:6
But Avram said unto Saray, Behold, thy maid [is] in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Saray dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face. |
|
16:7 ¶
And the angelº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
foundº
herºº
byº
a fountainº
of waterº
in the wilderness,º
byº
the fountainº
in the wayº
to
Šûr
שׁוּר.º |
|
16:7 ¶
And the angel of Yahweh found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. |

16:8
And he said,ºº

הָגָר,º
§äray's
שָׂרַיº
maid,º
whenceººº
camestº
thou?ºº
and whitherº
wilt thou go?ººº
And she said,ºº
Iº
fleeºº
from the faceºº
of my mistressº

שָׂרַי.º |

16:8
And he said, Hagar, Saray's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Saray. |
|
16:9
And the angelº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
saidºº
unto her, Returnºº
toº
thy mistress,º
and submitºº
thyselfº
underº
her hands.º |

16:9
And the angel of Yahweh said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. |
|
16:10
And the angelº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
saidºº
unto her, I will multiplyºº
thy seedº
exceedingly,ºººº
that it shall notº
be numberedºº
for multitude.ºº |
|
16:10
And the angel of Yahweh said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. |
|
16:11
And the angelº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
saidºº
unto her, Behold,º
thou [art] with child,º
and shalt bearºº
a son,º
and shalt callºº
his nameº
Yišmä`ë´l
יִשׁמָעֵאל;º
becauseº
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
hath heardººº
thy affliction.º |

16:11
And the angel of Yahweh said unto her, Behold, thou [art] with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Yishmael; because Yahweh hath heard thy affliction. |
|
16:12
And heº
will beº
a wildº
man;º
his handº
[will be] against every man,º
and every man'sº
handº
against him; and he shall dwellºº
in the presenceºº
of allº
his brethren.º |
|
16:12
And he will be a wild man; his hand [will be] against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. |
|
16:13
And she calledºº
the nameº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
that spakeºº
untoº
her, Thouº
´Ël
אֵלº
seestº
me:º
forº
she said,ºº
Have I alsoº
hereº
lookedºº
afterº
himº
that seethº
me?º |

16:13
And she called the name of Yahweh that spake unto her, Thou El seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? |
|
16:14
Whereforeºº
the wellº
was calledºº
Bæ´ër Laçay Rö´î
בְּאֵר־לַחַי־רֹאִי;ºº
behold,º
[it is] betweenº
Käðëš
קָדֵשׁº
and
Bäreð
בָּרֶד.º |
|
16:14
Wherefore the well was called Beer-Lachay-Roi; behold, [it is] between Qadesh and Bared. |

16:15 ¶
And

And Hagar bare Avram a son: and Avram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Yishmael. |

And

[was] fourscoreºº
and sixº
yearsº
old,º
when

bareººº
Yišmä`ë´l
יִשׁמָעֵאלº
to
´Avräm
אַברָם.º |

And Avram [was] fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Yishmael to Avram. |
