 38:1 ¶ And it came to passº at thatº time,º that Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº went downºº fromºº his brethren,º and turnedºº inº toº a certainº `Áðullämî עֲדֻלָּמִי,º whose nameº [was] Çîrà חִירָה.º

 38:1 ¶ And it came to pass at that time, that Yehudah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullami, whose name [was] Chirah.

 38:2 And Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº sawºº thereº a daughterº of a certainº Cæna`ánî כְּנַעֲנִי,º whose nameº [was] Šûå` שׁוּעַ;º and he tookº her,ºº and went inºº untoº her.

 38:2 And Yehudah saw there a daughter of a certain Kenaani, whose name [was] Shua; and he took her, and went in unto her.

 38:3 And she conceived,ºº and bareºº a son;º and he calledººº his nameº `Ër עֵר.º

 38:3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

 38:4 And she conceivedºº again,º and bareºº a son;º and she calledººº his nameº ´Ônän אוֹנָן.º

 38:4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

 38:5 And she yet againº conceived,ºº and bareºº a son;º and calledººº his nameº Šëlà שֵׁלָה:º and he wasº at Cæzîv כְּזִיב,º when she bareºº him.

 38:5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Keziv, when she bare him.

 38:6 And Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº tookºº a wifeº for `Ër עֵרº his firstborn,º whose nameº [was] Tämär תָּמָר.º

 38:6 And Yehudah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name [was] Tamar.

 38:7 And `Ër עֵר,º Yæhûðà's יְהוּדָהº firstborn,º wasº wickedº in the sightº of Yähwè יָהוֶה;º and Yähwè יָהוֶהº slewºº him.

 38:7 And Er, Yehudah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Yahweh; and Yahweh slew him.

 38:8 And Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº saidºº unto ´Ônän אוֹנָן,º Go inºº untoº thy brother'sº wife,º and marryºº her, and raise upºº seedº to thy brother.º

 38:8 And Yehudah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

 38:9 And ´Ônän אוֹנָןº knewºº thatº the seedº should notº beº his; and it came to pass,º whenº he went inºº untoº his brother'sº wife,º that he spilledºº [it] on the ground,º lestº that he should giveºº seedº to his brother.º

 38:9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled [it] on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

 38:10 And the thing whichº he didºº displeasedºººº Yähwè יָהוֶה:º wherefore he slewºº him also.º

 38:10 And the thing which he did displeased Yahweh: wherefore he slew him also.

 38:11 Then saidºº Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº to Tämär תָּמָרº his daughter in law,º Remainºº a widowº at thy father'sº house,º tillº Šëlà שֵׁלָהº my sonº be grown:ºº forº he said,ºº Lest peradventureº heº dieºº also,º as his brethrenº [did]. And Tämär תָּמָרº wentººº and dweltºº in her father'sº house.º

 38:11 Then said Yehudah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren [did]. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

 38:12 ¶ And in processºº of timeºº the daughterº of Šûå` שׁוּעַº Yæhûðà's יְהוּדָהº wifeº died;ºº and Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº was comforted,ºº and went upºº untoº his sheepshearersººº to Timnä± תִּמנָת,º heº and his friendº Çîrà חִירָהº the `Áðullämî עֲדֻלָּמִי.º

 38:12 ¶ And in process of time the daughter of Shua Yehudah's wife died; and Yehudah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Chirah the Adullami.

 38:13 And it was toldºº Tämär תָּמָר,º saying,ºº Beholdº thy father in lawº goeth upºº to Timnä± תִּמנָתº to shearºº his sheep.º

 38:13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

 38:14 And she putºº her widow'sº garmentsº offºº fromºº her, and coveredº herºº with a vail,º and wrapped herself,ºº and satº inºº an openºº place,º whichº [is] byº the wayº to Timnä± תִּמנָת;º forº she sawºº thatº Šëlà שֵׁלָהº was grown,ºº and sheº was notº givenºº unto him to wife.º

 38:14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which [is] by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

 38:15 When Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº sawº her,ºº he thoughtºº her [to be] an harlot;ºº becauseº she had coveredºº her face.º

 38:15 When Yehudah saw her, he thought her [to be] an harlot; because she had covered her face.

 38:16 And he turnedºº untoº her byº the way,º and said,ºº Go to,ºº I pray thee,º let me come inºº untoº thee; (forº he knewºº notº thatº sheº [was] his daughter in law.)º And she said,ºº Whatº wilt thou giveºº me, thatº thou mayest come inºº untoº me?

 38:16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she [was] his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

 38:17 And he said,ºº Iº will sendºº [thee] a kidºº fromº the flock.º And she said,ºº Wilt thou giveºº [me] a pledge,º tillº thou sendºº [it]?

 38:17 And he said, I will send [thee] a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give [me] a pledge, till thou send [it]?

 38:18 And he said,ºº Whatºº pledgeº shall I giveºº thee? And she said,ºº Thy signet,º and thy bracelets,º and thy staffº thatº [is] in thine hand.º And he gaveºº [it] her, and came inºº untoº her, and she conceivedºº by him.

 38:18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that [is] in thine hand. And he gave [it] her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

 38:19 And she arose,ºº and went away,ººº and laid byºº her vailº fromºº her, and put onºº the garmentsº of her widowhood.º

 38:19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

 38:20 And Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº sentººº the kidºº by the handº of his friendº the `Áðullämî עֲדֻלָּמִי,º to receiveºº [his] pledgeº from the woman'sº hand:ºº but he foundº herºº not.º

 38:20 And Yehudah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullami, to receive [his] pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.

 38:21 Then he askedººº the menºº of that place,º saying,ºº Whereº [is] the harlot,º thatº [was] openlyºº byº the way side?º And they said,ºº There wasº noº harlotº in thisº [place].

 38:21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where [is] the harlot, that [was] openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this [place].

 38:22 And he returnedºº toº Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה,º and said,ºº I cannotº findºº her; and alsoº the menºº of the placeº said,ºº [that] there wasº noº harlotº in thisº [place].

 38:22 And he returned to Yehudah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, [that] there was no harlot in this [place].

 38:23 And Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº said,ºº Let her takeºº [it] to her, lestº we beº shamed:º behold,º I sentºº thisº kid,º and thouº hast notº foundºº her.

 38:23 And Yehudah said, Let her take [it] to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

 38:24 ¶ And it came to passº about threeºº monthsº after, that it was toldºº Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה,º saying,ºº Tämär תָּמָרº thy daughter in lawº hath played the harlot;ºº and also,º behold,º she [is] with childº by whoredom.º And Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº said,ºº Bring her forth,ºº and let her be burnt.ºº

 38:24 ¶ And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Yehudah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she [is] with child by whoredom. And Yehudah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

 38:25 When sheº [was] brought forth,ºº sheº sentºº toº her father in law,º saying,ºº By the man,º whoseº theseº [are, am] Iº with child:º and she said,ºº Discern,ºº I pray thee,º whoseº [are] these,º the signet,º and bracelets,º and staff.º

 38:25 When she [was] brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these [are, am] I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose [are] these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

 38:26 And Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº acknowledgedºº [them], and said,ºº She hath been more righteousºº thanº I; becauseº thatºº I gaveºº her notº to Šëlà שֵׁלָהº my son.º And he knewº herºº againºº noº more.º

 38:26 And Yehudah acknowledged [them], and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

 38:27 ¶ And it came to passº in the timeº of her travail,ºº that, behold,º twinsº [were] in her womb.º

 38:27 ¶ And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins [were] in her womb.

 38:28 And it came to pass,º when she travailed,ºº that [the one] put outºº [his] hand:º and the midwifeºº tookºº and boundºº uponº his handº a scarlet thread,º saying,ºº Thisº came outºº first.º

 38:28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that [the one] put out [his] hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

 38:29 And it came to pass,º as he drew backºº his hand,º that, behold,º his brotherº came out:ºº and she said,ºº Howº hast thou broken forth?ºº [this] breachº [be] uponº thee: therefore his nameº was calledºº Perex פֶּרֶץ.º

 38:29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? [this] breach [be] upon thee: therefore his name was called Peretz.

 38:30 And afterwardº came outºº his brother,º thatº had the scarlet threadº uponº his hand:º and his nameº was calledºº Zäraç זָרַח.º

 38:30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarach.
