 28:1 ¶ And Yixçäk יִצחָקº calledººº Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹב,º and blessedºº him, and chargedºº him, and saidºº unto him, Thou shalt notº takeºº a wifeº of the daughtersºº of Cænä`an כְּנָעַן.º

 28:1 ¶ And Yitzchaq called Yaaqov, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Kenaan.

 28:2 Arise,ºº goººº to Paddan ´Áräm פַּדַּן־אֲרָם,º to the houseº of Bæ±û´ël בְּתוּאֵלº thy mother'sº father;º and takeºº thee a wifeº from thenceºº of the daughtersºº of Lävän לָבָןº thy mother'sº brother.º

 28:2 Arise, go to Paddan-Aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Lavan thy mother's brother.

 28:3 And ´Ël אֵלº Šadday שַׁדַּיº blessºº thee, and make thee fruitful,ºº and multiplyºº thee, that thou mayest beº a multitudeº of people;º

 28:3 And El Shadday bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;

 28:4 And giveºº theeº the blessingº of ´Avrähäm אַברָהָם,º to thee, and to thy seedº withº thee; that thou mayest inheritººº the landº wherein thou art a stranger,º whichº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº gaveºº unto ´Avrähäm אַברָהָם.º

 28:4 And give thee the blessing of Avraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which Elohim gave unto Avraham.

 28:5 And Yixçäk יִצחָקº sent awayººº Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹב:º and he wentººº to Paddan ´Áräm פַּדַּן־אֲרָםº untoº Lävän לָבָן,º sonº of Bæ±û´ël בְּתוּאֵלº the ´Árammî אֲרַמִּי,º the brotherº of Rivkà רִבקָה,º Ya`áköv's יַעֲקֹבº and `Ë$äw's עֵשָׂוº mother.º

 28:5 And Yitzchaq sent away Yaaqov: and he went to Paddan-Aram unto Lavan, son of Bethuel the Arammi, the brother of Rivqah, Yaaqov's and Esaw's mother.

 28:6 ¶ When `Ë$äw עֵשָׂוº sawºº thatº Yixçäk יִצחָקº had blessedººº Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹב,º and sent him awayººº to Paddan ´Áräm פַּדַּן־אֲרָם,º to takeºº him a wifeº from thence;ºº and that as he blessedºº him he gave him a charge,ººº saying,ºº Thou shalt notº takeºº a wifeº of the daughtersºº of Cænä`an כְּנָעַן;º

 28:6 ¶ When Esaw saw that Yitzchaq had blessed Yaaqov, and sent him away to Paddan-Aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Kenaan;

 28:7 And that Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº obeyedººº his fatherº and his mother,º and was goneººº to Paddan ´Áräm פַּדַּן־אֲרָם;º

 28:7 And that Yaaqov obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Paddan-Aram;

 28:8 And `Ë$äw עֵשָׂוº seeingºº thatº the daughtersº of Cænä`an כְּנָעַןº pleasedº notºº Yixçäk יִצחָקº his father;º

 28:8 And Esaw seeing that the daughters of Kenaan pleased not Yitzchaq his father;

 28:9 Then wentººº `Ë$äw עֵשָׂוº untoº Yišmä`ë´l יִשׁמָעֵאל,º and tookºº untoº the wivesº which he hadº Mäçála± מָחֲלַתº the daughterº of Yišmä`ë´l יִשׁמָעֵאלº ´Avrähäm's אַברָהָםº son,º the sisterº of Næväyö± נְבָיֹת,º to be his wife.º

 28:9 Then went Esaw unto Yishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Machalath the daughter of Yishmael Avraham's son, the sister of Nevayoth, to be his wife.

 28:10 ¶ And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº went outºº from Bæ´ër Ševa` בְּאֵר־שֶׁבַע,ºº and wentººº toward Çärän חָרָן.º

 28:10 ¶ And Yaaqov went out from Beer-Sheva, and went toward Charan.

 28:11 And he lightedºº upon a certain place,º and tarried there all night,ººº becauseº the sunº was set;ºº and he tookºº of the stonesºº of that place,º and putºº [them for] his pillows,º and lay downºº in thatº placeº to sleep.ºº

 28:11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put [them for] his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.

 28:12 And he dreamed,ºº and beholdº a ladderº set upºº on the earth,º and the topº of itº reachedºº to heaven:º and beholdº the angelsº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº ascendingºº and descendingºº on it.

 28:12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of Elohim ascending and descending on it.

 28:13 And, behold,º Yähwè יָהוֶהº stoodºº aboveº it, and said,ºº Iº [am] Yähwè יָהוֶהº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of ´Avrähäm אַברָהָםº thy father,º and the ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of Yixçäk יִצחָק:º the landº whereonºº thouº liest,ºº to thee will I giveº it,ºº and to thy seed;º

 28:13 And, behold, Yahweh stood above it, and said, I [am] Yahweh Elohim of Avraham thy father, and the Elohim of Yitzchaq: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

 28:14 And thy seedº shall beº as the dustº of the earth,º and thou shalt spread abroadºº to the west,º and to the east,º and to the north,º and to the south:º and in thee and in thy seedº shall allº the familiesº of the earthº be blessed.ºº

 28:14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

 28:15 And, behold,º Iº [am] withº thee, and will keepºº thee in allº [places] whitherº thou goest,ººº and will bring thee againºº intoº thisº land;º forº I will notº leaveºº thee, untilººº I have doneººº [that] whichº I have spokenºº to thee of.

 28:15 And, behold, I [am] with thee, and will keep thee in all [places] whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done [that] which I have spoken to thee of.

 28:16 ¶ And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº awakedºº out of his sleep,ºº and he said,ºº Surelyº Yähwè יָהוֶהº isº in thisº place;º and Iº knewºº [it] not.º

 28:16 ¶ And Yaaqov awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely Yahweh is in this place; and I knew [it] not.

 28:17 And he was afraid,ºº and said,ºº Howº dreadfulºº [is] thisº place!º thisº [is] noneº other butºº the houseº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º and thisº [is] the gateº of heaven.º

 28:17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful [is] this place! this [is] none other but the house of Elohim, and this [is] the gate of heaven.

 28:18 And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº rose up earlyºº in the morning,º and tookººº the stoneº thatº he had putºº [for] his pillows,º and set it upººº [for] a pillar,º and pouredºº oilº uponº the topº of it.º

 28:18 And Yaaqov rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put [for] his pillows, and set it up [for] a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

 28:19 And he calledººº the nameº of thatº placeº Bê± ´Ël בֵּית־אֵל:º butº the nameº of that cityº [was called] Lûz לוּזº at the first.º

 28:19 And he called the name of that place Beth-El: but the name of that city [was called] Luz at the first.

 28:20 And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº vowedºº a vow,º saying,ºº Ifº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº will beº withº me, and will keepº meºº in thisº wayº thatº Iº go,ºº and will giveºº me breadº to eat,ºº and raimentº to put on,ºº

 28:20 And Yaaqov vowed a vow, saying, If Elohim will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

 28:21 So that I come againºº toº my father'sº houseº in peace;º then shall Yähwè יָהוֶהº beº my ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º

 28:21 So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall Yahweh be my Elohim:

 28:22 And thisº stone,º whichº I have setºº [for] a pillar,º shall beº ´Élöhîm's אֱלֹהִיםº house:º and of allº thatº thou shalt giveºº me I will surelyºº give the tenthºº unto thee.

 28:22 And this stone, which I have set [for] a pillar, shall be Elohim's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
