 29:1 ¶ Then Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº went onºº his journey,ºº and cameººº into the landº of the peopleº of the east.º

 29:1 ¶ Then Yaaqov went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

 29:2 And he looked,ºº and beholdº a wellº in the field,º and, lo,º thereº [were] threeº flocksº of sheepº lyingºº byº it; forº out ofº thatº wellº they wateredºº the flocks:º and a greatº stoneº [was] uponº the well'sº mouth.º

 29:2 And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there [were] three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone [was] upon the well's mouth.

 29:3 And thitherº were allº the flocksº gathered:ºº and they rolledººº the stoneº fromºº the well'sº mouth,º and wateredººº the sheep,º and putººº the stoneº againºº uponº the well'sº mouthº in his place.º

 29:3 And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place.

 29:4 And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº saidºº unto them, My brethren,º whenceºº [be] ye?º And they said,ºº Of Çärän חָרָןºº [are] we.º

 29:4 And Yaaqov said unto them, My brethren, whence [be] ye? And they said, Of Charan [are] we.

 29:5 And he saidºº unto them, Knowºº yeº Lävän לָבָןº the sonº of Näçôr נָחוֹר?º And they said,ºº We knowºº [him].

 29:5 And he said unto them, Know ye Lavan the son of Nachor? And they said, We know [him].

 29:6 And he saidºº unto them, [Is] he well?º And they said,ºº [He is] well:º and, behold,º Räçël רָחֵלº his daughterº comethºº withº the sheep.º

 29:6 And he said unto them, [Is] he well? And they said, [He is] well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.

 29:7 And he said,ºº Lo,º [it is] yetº highº day,º neitherº [is it] timeº that the cattleº should be gathered together:ºº waterºº ye the sheep,º and goººº [and] feedºº [them].

 29:7 And he said, Lo, [it is] yet high day, neither [is it] time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go [and] feed [them].

 29:8 And they said,ºº We cannot,ººº untilºº allº the flocksº be gathered together,ºº and [till] they rollººº the stoneº fromºº the well'sº mouth;º then we waterºº the sheep.º

 29:8 And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and [till] they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.

 29:9 ¶ And while he yetº spakeºº withº them, Räçël רָחֵלº cameºº withº her father'sº sheep:º forº sheº keptº them.ºº

 29:9 ¶ And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she kept them.

 29:10 And it came to pass,º whenº Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº sawººº Räçël רָחֵלº the daughterº of Lävän לָבָןº his mother'sº brother,º and the sheepº of Lävän לָבָןº his mother'sº brother,º that Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº went near,ºº and rolledººº the stoneº fromºº the well'sº mouth,º and wateredººº the flockº of Lävän לָבָןº his mother'sº brother.º

 29:10 And it came to pass, when Yaaqov saw Rachel the daughter of Lavan his mother's brother, and the sheep of Lavan his mother's brother, that Yaaqov went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Lavan his mother's brother.

 29:11 And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº kissedºº Räçël רָחֵל,º and lifted upººº his voice,º and wept.ºº

 29:11 And Yaaqov kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.

 29:12 And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº toldºº Räçël רָחֵלº thatº heº [was] her father'sº brother,º and thatº heº [was] Rivkà's רִבקָהº son:º and she ranºº and toldºº her father.º

 29:12 And Yaaqov told Rachel that he [was] her father's brother, and that he [was] Rivqah's son: and she ran and told her father.

 29:13 And it came to pass,º when Lävän לָבָןº heardººº the tidingsº of Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº his sister'sº son,º that he ranºº to meetºº him, and embracedºº him, and kissedºº him, and broughtºº him toº his house.º And he toldºº Lävän לָבָןºº allº theseº things.º

 29:13 And it came to pass, when Lavan heard the tidings of Yaaqov his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Lavan all these things.

 29:14 And Lävän לָבָןº saidºº to him, Surelyº thouº [art] my boneº and my flesh.º And he abodeºº withº him the spaceº of a month.º

 29:14 And Lavan said to him, Surely thou [art] my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.

 29:15 ¶ And Lävän לָבָןº saidºº unto Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹב,º Becauseº thouº [art] my brother,º shouldest thou therefore serveºº me for nought?º tellºº me, whatº [shall] thy wagesº [be]?

 29:15 ¶ And Lavan said unto Yaaqov, Because thou [art] my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what [shall] thy wages [be]?

 29:16 And Lävän לָבָןº had twoº daughters:º the nameº of the elderº [was] Lë´à לֵאָה,º and the nameº of the youngerº [was] Räçël רָחֵל.º

 29:16 And Lavan had two daughters: the name of the elder [was] Leah, and the name of the younger [was] Rachel.

 29:17 Lë´à לֵאָהº [was] tenderº eyed;º but Räçël רָחֵלº wasº beautifulºº and wellº favoured.º

 29:17 Leah [was] tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.

 29:18 And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº lovedººº Räçël רָחֵל;º and said,ºº I will serveºº thee sevenº yearsº for Räçël רָחֵלº thy youngerº daughter.º

 29:18 And Yaaqov loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.

 29:19 And Lävän לָבָןº said,ºº [It is] betterº that I giveºº her to thee, than that I should giveººº her to anotherº man:º abideºº withº me.

 29:19 And Lavan said, [It is] better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.

 29:20 And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº servedºº sevenº yearsº for Räçël רָחֵל;º and they seemedºº unto him [but] a fewº days,º for the loveº he hadº to her.

 29:20 And Yaaqov served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him [but] a few days, for the love he had to her.

 29:21 ¶ And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº saidºº untoº Lävän לָבָן,º Giveºº [me]º my wife,º forº my daysº are fulfilled,ºº that I may go inºº untoº her.

 29:21 ¶ And Yaaqov said unto Lavan, Give [me] my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.

 29:22 And Lävän לָבָןº gathered togetherººº allº the menºº of the place,º and madeºº a feast.º

 29:22 And Lavan gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

 29:23 And it came to passº in the evening,º that he tookººº Lë´à לֵאָהº his daughter,º and broughtºº her toº him; and he went inºº untoº her.

 29:23 And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.

 29:24 And Lävän לָבָןº gaveºº unto his daughterº Lë´à לֵאָהºº Zilpà זִלפָּהº his maidº [for] an handmaid.º

 29:24 And Lavan gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid [for] an handmaid.

 29:25 And it came to pass,º that in the morning,º behold,º itº [was] Lë´à לֵאָה:º and he saidºº toº Lävän לָבָן,º Whatº [is] thisº thou hast doneºº unto me? did notº I serveºº withº thee for Räçël רָחֵל?º whereforeº then hast thou beguiledºº me?

 29:25 And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it [was] Leah: and he said to Lavan, What [is] this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?

 29:26 And Lävän לָבָןº said,ºº It must notº be soº doneºº in our country,º to giveºº the youngerº beforeº the firstborn.º

 29:26 And Lavan said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

 29:27 Fulfilºº herº week,º and we will giveºº theeº thisº alsoº for the serviceº whichº thou shalt serveºº withº me yetº sevenº otherº years.º

 29:27 Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.

 29:28 And Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº didºº so,º and fulfilledºº herº week:º and he gaveºº himº Räçël רָחֵלº his daughterº to wifeº also.

 29:28 And Yaaqov did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.

 29:29 And Lävän לָבָןº gaveºº to Räçël רָחֵלº his daughterºº Bilhà בִּלהָהº his handmaidº to be her maid.º

 29:29 And Lavan gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.

 29:30 And he went inºº alsoº untoº Räçël רָחֵל,º and he lovedºº alsoºº Räçël רָחֵלº more than Lë´à לֵאָה,ºº and servedºº withº him yetº sevenº otherº years.º

 29:30 And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.

 29:31 ¶ And when Yähwè יָהוֶהº sawºº thatº Lë´à לֵאָהº [was] hated,ºº he openedººº her womb:º but Räçël רָחֵלº [was] barren.º

 29:31 ¶ And when Yahweh saw that Leah [was] hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel [was] barren.

 29:32 And Lë´à לֵאָהº conceived,ºº and bareºº a son,º and she calledºº his nameº Ræ´ûvën רְאוּבֵן:º forº she said,ºº Surelyº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath lookedºº upon my affliction;º nowº thereforeº my husbandº will loveºº me.

 29:32 And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuven: for she said, Surely Yahweh hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.

 29:33 And she conceivedºº again,º and bareºº a son;º and said,ºº Becauseº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath heardºº thatº Iº [was] hated,ºº he hath therefore givenºº meº thisº [son] also:º and she calledºº his nameº Šim`ôn שִׁמעוֹן.º

 29:33 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because Yahweh hath heard that I [was] hated, he hath therefore given me this [son] also: and she called his name Shimon.

 29:34 And she conceivedº again,ººº and bareºº a son;º and said,ºº Nowº this timeº will my husbandº be joinedºº untoº me, becauseº I have bornºº him threeº sons:º thereforeºº was his nameº calledºº Lëwî לֵוִי.º

 29:34 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Lewi.

 29:35 And she conceivedºº again,º and bareºº a son:º and she said,ºº Nowº will I praiseººº Yähwè יָהוֶה:º thereforeºº she calledºº his nameº Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה;º and leftºº bearing.ººº

 29:35 And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise Yahweh: therefore she called his name Yehudah; and left bearing.
