 37:1 ¶ And it came to pass,º when kingº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº heardºº [it], that he rentººº his clothes,º and coveredºº himselfº with sackcloth,º and wentºº into the houseº of Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 37:1 ¶ And it came to pass, when king Chizqiyyah heard [it], that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Yahweh.

 37:2 And he sentººº ´Elyäkîm אֶליָקִים,º whoº [was] overº the household,º and Ševnä´ שֶׁבנָאº the scribe,ºº and the eldersº of the priestsº coveredºº with sackcloth,º untoº Yæša`yà יְשַׁעיָהº the prophetº the sonº of ´Ämôx אָמוֹץ.º

 37:2 And he sent Elyaqim, who [was] over the household, and Shevna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Yeshayah the prophet the son of Amotz.

 37:3 And they saidºº untoº him, Thusº saithºº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּה,º Thisº dayº [is] a dayº of trouble,º and of rebuke,º and of blasphemy:º forº the childrenº are comeºº toº the birth,º and [there is] notº strengthº to bring forth.ºº

 37:3 And they said unto him, Thus saith Chizqiyyah, This day [is] a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and [there is] not strength to bring forth.

 37:4 It may beº Yähwè יָהוֶהº thy ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº will hearººº the wordsº of Rav Šäkì רַב־שָׁקֵה,º whomº the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּרº his ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº hath sentºº to reproachºº the livingº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º and will reproveºº the wordsº whichº Yähwè יָהוֶהº thy ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº hath heard:ºº wherefore lift upºº [thy] prayerº forº the remnantº that is left.ºº

 37:4 It may be Yahweh thy Elohim will hear the words of Rav-Shaqeh, whom the king of Ashshur his adon hath sent to reproach the living Elohim, and will reprove the words which Yahweh thy Elohim hath heard: wherefore lift up [thy] prayer for the remnant that is left.

 37:5 So the servantsº of kingº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº cameºº toº Yæša`yà יְשַׁעיָה.º

 37:5 So the servants of king Chizqiyyah came to Yeshayah.

 37:6 ¶ And Yæša`yà יְשַׁעיָהº saidºº untoº them, Thusº shall ye sayºº untoº your ´áðôn אֲדוֹן,º Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º Be not afraidººº ofºº the wordsº thatº thou hast heard,ºº wherewithº the servantsº of the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּרº have blasphemedºº me.

 37:6 ¶ And Yeshayah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your adon, Thus saith Yahweh, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Ashshur have blasphemed me.

 37:7 Behold,º I will sendºº a blastº upon him, and he shall hearºº a rumour,º and returnºº toº his own land;º and I will cause him to fallºº by the swordº in his own land.º

 37:7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

 37:8 ¶ So Rav Šäkì רַב־שָׁקֵהº returned,ºº and foundººº the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּרº warringºº againstº Livnà לִבנָה:º forº he had heardºº thatº he was departedºº from Lä¢îš לָכִישׁ.ºº

 37:8 ¶ So Rav-Shaqeh returned, and found the king of Ashshur warring against Livnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lakhish.

 37:9 And he heardºº sayºº concerningº Tirhäkà תִּרהָקָהº kingº of Cûš כּוּשׁ,º He is come forthºº to make warºº withº thee. And when he heardºº [it], he sentºº messengersº toº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּה,º saying,ºº

 37:9 And he heard say concerning Tirhaqah king of Kush, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard [it], he sent messengers to Chizqiyyah, saying,

 37:10 Thusº shall ye speakºº toº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº kingº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה,º saying,ºº Let notº thy ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º in whomº thouº trustest,ºº deceiveºº thee, saying,ºº Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº shall notº be givenºº into the handº of the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּר.º

 37:10 Thus shall ye speak to Chizqiyyah king of Yehudah, saying, Let not thy Elohim, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Yerushalaim shall not be given into the hand of the king of Ashshur.

 37:11 Behold,º thouº hast heardºº whatº the kingsº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּרº have doneºº to allº landsº by destroying them utterly;ºº and shalt thouº be delivered?ºº

 37:11 Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Ashshur have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?

 37:12 Have the ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of the nationsº deliveredºº them whichº my fathersº have destroyed,ºº [as]º Gôzän גּוֹזָן,º and Çärän חָרָן,º and Rexef רֶצֶף,º and the childrenº of `Ëðen עֵדֶןº whichº [were] in Tæla$$är תְּלַשָּׂר?º

 37:12 Have the elohim of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, [as] Gozan, and Charan, and Retzef, and the children of Eden which [were] in Telassar?

 37:13 Whereº [is] the kingº of Çámä± חֲמָת,º and the kingº of ´Arpäð אַרפָּד,º and the kingº of the cityº of Sæfarwayim סְפַרוַיִם,º Hëna` הֵנַע,º and `Iwwà עִוָּה?º

 37:13 Where [is] the king of Chamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sefarwayim, Hena, and Iwwah?

 37:14 ¶ And Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº receivedººº the letterº from the handºº of the messengers,º and readºº it: and Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº went upºº unto the houseº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and spreadºº it beforeº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 37:14 ¶ And Chizqiyyah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Chizqiyyah went up unto the house of Yahweh, and spread it before Yahweh.

 37:15 And Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº prayedºº untoº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º saying,ºº

 37:15 And Chizqiyyah prayed unto Yahweh, saying,

 37:16 O Yähwè יָהוֶהº Xævä´ô± צְבָאוֹת,º ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º that dwellestºº [between] the cherubims,º thouº [art] the ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º [even] thou alone,º of allº the kingdomsº of the earth:º thouº hast madeººº heavenº and earth.º

 37:16 O Yahweh Tzevaoth, Elohim of Yisrael, that dwellest [between] the cherubims, thou [art] the Elohim, [even] thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.

 37:17 Inclineºº thine ear,º O Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and hear;ºº openºº thine eyes,º O Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and see:ºº and hearººº allº the wordsº of Sançërîv סַנחֵרִיב,º whichº hath sentºº to reproachºº the livingº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים.º

 37:17 Incline thine ear, O Yahweh, and hear; open thine eyes, O Yahweh, and see: and hear all the words of Sancheriv, which hath sent to reproach the living Elohim.

 37:18 Of a truth,º Yähwè יָהוֶה,º the kingsº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּרº have laid wasteººº allº the nations,º and their countries,º

 37:18 Of a truth, Yahweh, the kings of Ashshur have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,

 37:19 And have castººº their ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº into the fire:º forº theyº [were] noº ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º butºº the workº of men'sº hands,º woodº and stone:º therefore they have destroyedºº them.

 37:19 And have cast their elohim into the fire: for they [were] no elohim, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.

 37:20 Nowº therefore, O Yähwè יָהוֶהº our ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º saveºº us from his hand,ºº that allº the kingdomsº of the earthº may knowºº thatº thouº [art] Yähwè יָהוֶה,º [even] thou only.º

 37:20 Now therefore, O Yahweh our Elohim, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou [art] Yahweh, [even] thou only.

 37:21 ¶ Then Yæša`yà יְשַׁעיָהº the sonº of ´Ämôx אָמוֹץº sentºº untoº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּה,º saying,ºº Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º Whereasº thou hast prayedºº toº me againstº Sançërîv סַנחֵרִיבº kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּר:º

 37:21 ¶ Then Yeshayah the son of Amotz sent unto Chizqiyyah, saying, Thus saith Yahweh Elohim of Yisrael, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sancheriv king of Ashshur:

 37:22 Thisº [is] the wordº whichº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath spokenºº concerningº him; The virgin,º the daughterº of Xiyyôn צִיּוֹן,º hath despisedººº thee, [and] laughed thee to scorn;ºº the daughterº of Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº hath shakenºº her headº atº thee.º

 37:22 This [is] the word which Yahweh hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Tziyyon, hath despised thee, [and] laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Yerushalaim hath shaken her head at thee.

 37:23 º Whomº hast thou reproachedºº and blasphemed?ºº and againstº whomº hast thou exaltedºº [thy] voice,º and lifted upºº thine eyesº on high?º [even] againstº the Holy Oneº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º

 37:23 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted [thy] voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? [even] against the Holy One of Yisrael.

 37:24 Byº thy servantsº hast thou reproachedºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and hast said,ºº By the multitudeº of my chariotsº am Iº come upºº to the heightº of the mountains,º to the sidesº of Lævänôn לְבָנוֹן;º and I will cut downºº the tallº cedarsº thereof, [and] the choiceº fir treesº thereof: and I will enterºº into the heightº of his border,º [and] the forestº of his Carmel כַּרמֶל.ºº

 37:24 By thy servants hast thou reproached Yahweh, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Levanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, [and] the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, [and] the forest of his Karmel.

 37:25 Iº have digged,ºº and drunkºº water;º and with the soleº of my feetº have I dried upºº allº the riversº of the besieged places.º

 37:25 I have digged, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.

 37:26 Hast thou notº heardºº long ago,ºº [how] I have doneºº it; [and] of ancientº times,ºº that I have formedºº it? nowº have I broughtºº it to pass,º that thou shouldest beº to lay wasteºº defencedºº citiesº [into] ruinousºº heaps.º

 37:26 Hast thou not heard long ago, [how] I have done it; [and] of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities [into] ruinous heaps.

 37:27 Therefore their inhabitantsºº [were] of smallº power,º they were dismayedºº and confounded:ºº they wereº [as] the grassº of the field,º and [as] the greenº herb,º [as] the grassº on the housetops,º and [as corn] blastedºº beforeº it be grown up.º

 37:27 Therefore their inhabitants [were] of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were [as] the grass of the field, and [as] the green herb, [as] the grass on the housetops, and [as corn] blasted before it be grown up.

 37:28 But I knowºº thy abode,ºº and thy going out,ºº and thy coming in,ºº and thy rageºº againstº me.

 37:28 But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.

 37:29 Becauseº thy rageºº againstº me, and thy tumult,º is come upºº into mine ears,º therefore will I putºº my hookº in thy nose,º and my bridleº in thy lips,º and I will turn thee backºº by the wayº by whichº thou camest.ºº

 37:29 Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

 37:30 And thisº [shall be] a signº unto thee, Ye shall eatºº [this] yearº such as growethº of itself;º and the secondº yearº that which springethº of the same:º and in the thirdº yearº sowºº ye, and reap,ºº and plantºº vineyards,º and eatºº the fruitº thereof.

 37:30 And this [shall be] a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat [this] year such as groweth of itself; and the second year that which springeth of the same: and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.

 37:31 And the remnantºº that is escapedº of the houseº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº shall againºº take rootº downward,º and bearºº fruitº upward:º

 37:31 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Yehudah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:

 37:32 Forº out of Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםºº shall go forthºº a remnant,º and they that escapeº out of mountºº Xiyyôn צִיּוֹן:º the zealº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº Xævä´ô± צְבָאוֹתº shall doºº this.º

 37:32 For out of Yerushalaim shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Tziyyon: the zeal of Yahweh Tzevaoth shall do this.

 37:33 Thereforeº thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº concerningº the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּר,º He shall notº comeºº intoº thisº city,º norº shootºº an arrowº there,º norº come beforeºº it with shields,º norº castºº a bankº againstº it.

 37:33 Therefore thus saith Yahweh concerning the king of Ashshur, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.

 37:34 By the wayº thatº he came,ºº by the same shall he return,ºº and shall notº comeºº intoº thisº city,º saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 37:34 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith Yahweh.

 37:35 For I will defendººº thisº cityº to saveºº it for mine own sake,º and for my servantº Däwið's דָּוִדº sake.º

 37:35 For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant Dawid's sake.

 37:36 Then the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº went forth,ºº and smoteºº in the campº of the ´Aššûrîm אַשּׁוּרִיםº a hundredº and fourscoreº and fiveº thousand:º and when they arose earlyºº in the morning,º behold,º they [were] allº deadºº corpses.º

 37:36 Then the angel of Yahweh went forth, and smote in the camp of the Ashshurim a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they [were] all dead corpses.

 37:37 ¶ So Sançërîv סַנחֵרִיבº kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּרº departed,ºº and wentººº and returned,ºº and dweltºº at Nînwì נִינוֵה.º

 37:37 ¶ So Sancheriv king of Ashshur departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Ninweh.

 37:38 And it came to pass,º as heº was worshippingºº in the houseº of Nisrö¢ נִסרֹךº his ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º that ´Aðrammele¢ אַדרַמֶּלֶךº and §ar´exer שַׂראֶצֶרº his sonsº smoteºº him with the sword;º and theyº escapedºº into the landº of ´Árärä+ אֲרָרָט:º and ´Ësar Çaddön אֵסַר־חַדֹּןº his sonº reignedºº in his stead.º

 37:38 And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisrokh his elohim, that Adrammelekh and Saretzer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat: and Esar-Chaddon his son reigned in his stead.
